I know this has been discussed here, but I can't find the thread where it was outlined. I think Jim Weise gave a play-by-play of how it's done...

I can't seem to get the fast idle cam to kick over when it's cold. Is this a case where the choke isn't adjusted properly? I have had the carb apart revcently and was unsure about cold choke adjustment when I installed it.

Do you mean that while the choke is on, or partially closed, that the car isn't fast idling?

If so, there is a screw to adjust fast idle speed. Either it's way out, or it's missing all together.

This has got to be an easy fix, reply and we'll "finger it out".

The fast idle cam doesn't want to stay on fast idle when cold...it just slips down when the car is started...

The choke pullback is pulling it just far enough that the choke is being pulled open on startup. Hence, the cam is dropping almost instantly. I hate this thing and am ready to buy a reman carb with a divorced choke.

The carb is question is a 76 800cfm model with an electric choke conversion.

What happens if you adjust the choke spring (the black cap) to exert more force to keep the choke closed longer?

My Holley was like that, until I adjusted it at the black cap.

It's either that or the choke pull off is going too far. It should only open the choke roughly 1/4 of the way. I do not think that the amount of "pull off" is adjustable, however.

    Let me know.

    Update:

I adjusted the choke cap this morning. It works now!!!!

Only thing is, I can;t get the fast idle cam to kick down when it is warm. Jeeeeeez.

Also, why does my car fog the interior up so badly? I opened the door up this morning and got lost in the fog when it was warming up. Is the heater core leaking?? Kill me if it is.

Bruce, I've got your number....and I'll give you a call if I need any more help with the stupid choke. The choke in question is on my LeSabre, not the bungee top. I found a top frame for it and it's coming in the next couple weeks! So hopefully in a month I'll have a new top on it.

Did you ever get this solved?
    I am having the same problem starting my 70 when it's cold. It's a 350 with a 4b Quadrajet.
I'd adjust the fast idle screw for starters...if I knew which one it was.
Any input would be greatly appricated.
    Thanks -
    Randy

    Randy,

I sold the car about a month ago:grin:

But, I pretty much got it solved. I had a different setup that you do on your 70. I used a qjet with the hot air choke instead of the one you have (divorced). The fast idle screw is located on the side of the choke under the choke linkage on the carb.

    Good luck!

I found a QJet view on the net - found it - and got it set.
    Thx anyway.
