Ok so I have been racking my brain about this for months. I have a 66 sjylark 2dr. I am trying to think of a way to install a child seat without shoulder belts in the back. One idea I had was to have metal tabs welded in to accept the latch system I'm most new car seats. Has anyone seen this done or does any have a better idea because I'm stuck. I remember laying across the back seat of a 73 lesaber all the way to Canada. Or sitting in the middle front because I was shot enough that the grand hump did not bother me. :Dou::Dou::Dou:

I too have thought about this and not really sure what's safe or acceptable. I was thinking of that latch that hooks up in the rear tray also. Maybe a threaded U bolt slipped into two holes drilled through the package tray with a thick plate bracing both the front and the back bolted down (inside the trunk) ?? Then the lap belt obviously holds the car seat down and hook the upper strap/latch to the U bolt. Of course im no fabricator so this may be a horrible idea lol

Or hit the junk yard... it will be cheap and most of the imports have something like this.

That anchor bolt hook would probably work great.

Ya I was thinking anchor bolt as well. That way I can kept the stock appears ce on the outside ant the anchor bolt hidden under the seat. Need to find a good welder as I want to make shire they are there to stay. Shoulder belts might be harder to do since they were not offered in 66

I did add a bolt in the trunk mounted to one of the cross braces. I'll post a pic later. It holds ok I think with the lap belt but the lap belt worries me because it doesn't sinch down very tight Im going to look under the car where the rear seat is and if there is nothing in the way bolt two more u bolts and have them welded for add strength. Then attach the two car seat hooks to them like in a newer car. I will still use the lap belt though and I can still remove it for car shows. But am also not a fabricator like u said might not be a good idea.

I was looking over the instructions on my car seat and it shows one way to install with lap belt is to obviously feed the lap belt thru the lower back and use the upper strap/latch hooked to an anchor up at the package tray. I'm not too worried about the package tray as the car will stay in the family anyways and if I really need I could replace the package tray for a few bucks. I may try this route and bolt/weld a nice anchor hook in a stable place in the tray just behind the upper back seat. Hopefully before summer so we can cruise family style! :)

Should not be any need to weld anything.

here's a pic of my 70 when i added the shoulder belts

There were molded provisions and holes for the should belt anchors.
But metal there was no thicker than any other part of the shelf.

The belt anchor had two holes that matched the ones in the shelf, and a similar shaped elongated washer type anchor went under the shelf. The anchor under had two pre-threaded holes for the bolts.

So as long as your anchor has a beefy washer under the shelf, it should be plenty strong and just like what was factory in 70.

I'm not sure I understand the original problem: does your child seat require shoulder belts for proper installation? The carseat we have has a tether on the top for vehicles equipped with latch. As I recall (I can check the documentation when I get home), in a vehicle without latch, you just strap the tether to the car seat itself to keep it out of the way. In any case, in our older vehicles, we install the car seats using the lap belts.

It's also my understanding that a shoulder belt is not necessary. Most car seats have a lap-belt only mount option in their user manuals; while the car seat manufacturer will strongly recommend a rear anchor, it is not usually required (though it would of course be beneficial). Booster seats require shoulder belts, obviously.

I would think you'd be able to get the car seat pretty tight if you compress it into the rear bench with your knee, and then cinch the lap belt as much as possible. I have to do this in our late-model vehicles.

I've ran it like you with just the lap belt through the proper slot in the car seat. It just seemed a little floppy even when sinched down tight. Felt like the upper strap anchor would have given it some stability. Now that I think of it, my girl is almost big enough for no 3point harness and moving up to a booster with the shoulder belt... I'm going to have to install one

Ok out the lap belt through and the top latch onto a built mounted in the trunk. Seems to be solid. I still have to secure the rear seat down once I reupholster it but looks good to go so far

Baby seat, all you need is the lap belt. Actually works better then modern cards with the shoulder set up. But a booster seat will need the shoulder belt.
