i'm new to buicks but i would like to learn more of them. i'm picking up a 1970 buick skylark in about a month(taking delivery). not sure of the engine if its a 350 or 455, but it's no good. i have a running chevy 350 in my 72 c10. i want to swap the engine out the chevy to the buick. what all do i need? (i'm going to keep the buick engine for later rebuild)

Welcome, good thing you added that phrase about later rebuild or our
purists friends would be spanking.:spank:
Seems like it would save time and money to just do the rebuild and
put it back in the Buick. But I understand if the $$$ aren't available right now and you can't wait to drive it. Good luck

Save the pick up and use a Buick 350. You can buying a running Buick 350 for very little money. Junkyard 455s are not much more.

i'm active army stationed in germany. i only have 15 days of leave to fly home and then return back here in germany. in those 15 days i need to pull my chevy engine and install it in the skylark. that's not alot of time to enjoy it after i'm done, but its gonna have to do. but hey, if anyone has a already running buick v8 that they can part with in the columbia,sc area please by all means contact me. that will save me some time. thanks for the replies

If I could tell you exactly what you needed to do I would tell you. I dont though, and you might have some trouble finding someone to tell you because its not just the Buick guys, NO ONE likes to see Chevy engines go into their cars. Im not a big fan of it myself, but I understand what your situation is and why you want to do it. I beleive I can tell you that youre going to need a Chevy bellhousing to bolt it to that transmission, as BOP engines have a different bellhousing pattern on their blocks.

if you can find one,not very common in my neck of the woods:rant: ya got to buy the whole car then scrap it after rapeing the motor, which i just cant bring myself to do.ive passed on a few 455's just cause i cant see crushing a buick for the motor.:pp must have been my 5 years in a wrecking yard watching them be crushed(a 70 stg 1 no less!)

funny thing just happened. my wife reminded me that the transmission bolt pattern was the universal bop one. so any other engine besides the chevy should fit into the same area onto the tranny right? considering smallblock to smallblock or bigbblock to bigblock. so correct me if i'm wrong, if the buick engine is a 350, i should be able to drop in an olds 350 without changing anything else? i've had countless oldsmobiles in my time, thats why my wife remembers.

    alec296 i need another buick

with anythink other than a buick engine you will need to change the frame stands for the engine mounts, and keep the pulleys/brackets from the donor
car as they will be different also
olds have the fuel pump and starter/batterys on driver side also
its not big issues but will need to be dealt with
dont forget that you can drop a buick v6 in there with 350 mounts too
incase you come across a setup like a turbo engine(rear drives only)
how bad is the original engine?
maybe a good tune up and fresh carb?

i hope this message does not double post. but i had forgotten the GNs turbo6 could work in place of the v8. i don't know if the engine in it is truely bad, but the owner told me it will need some work. i just assumed he's stretching the truth and it would need a complete new engine. here are some pics. rust free, nice interior, but missing trim pieces and grill.

When did you plan on doing the swap? I ask because I have a 1970 Buick 350 (complete) with 3000 miles on it- all you'll need is a carb- I'll be moving to Georgia in July- your call-

Yeah, this is an old post, but does anyone know what ever happened to "lucky"?

"lucky"'s last post had him deployed to Iraq.

Other than that, I have nothing to offer to this thread.

I hope he's safe with a new screenname, and BUICK power.
