Charging system check

  1. I just installed an MSD 6AL in my 1969 GS with a 455. It runs just great with it installed. My car had the problem of shutting the iginition off and the car continues to idle happily (with the ignition off). So, I need the diode. I got the diode information from the list and put it in with the little band pointing to the voltage regulator (per MSD istructions). After that may car ran and shut off fine but my gen came on. So, I figured I put the diode in wrong. I flipped it around, the light went off and it runs super! After driving it around, I am thinking that it isnt charging like it should. My battery takes a poo after driving it a few times. (Sorry this is so long) Any ideas as to what I can check? I dont have the greatest understanding of the electrical sytem on cars.

What should a fully charged battery read, when the car is off?
How about when the car is running?
Should I check for voltage at the voltage regulator next to the diode?

    Help!
