I'm considering changing the interior color of my 64 Electra.... it's currently blue. I know I can paint the metal dash panels, dye the vinyl panels, recover the seats, etc but what about the steering wheel?

Can I paint it or do I need to replace it?

This isn't my car, but the interior is the same:

  2. You can paint a steering wheel no problem; people do it all the time after they have fixed the cracks in the wheel. (Have you run your finger along the back of the wheel and found the cracks?). You have to do all the careful prep just like anything else: clean, sand, clean, paint, buff, etc, but if it is in good condition, you can paint it.

With that being said, why are you interested in changing colors? Does the blue not suit you, or does it look bad in a few places?

    Let me know.

Thanks for the info. The wheel is in pretty good condition... a couple of cracks where the rim joins the cross bar.

The original interior is in need of some help. The vinyl is in good condition but the cloth inserts on the seats and door panels are bad. The carpet and headliner needs replaced too.

I'm considering changing the interior color because I am thinking about changing the exterior color. The original paint is Marlin blue but is very faded and in need of rust repair. The colori is ok, but since I need to repaint and replace a lot, I figured I'd take the oportunity to consider other colors.

  4. I hear you with the interior woes.

Over the years, my family and myself have owned four big '64 Cars (a mix of Wildcat's and LeSabre's) and it was interesting to note what lasted and did not between cars.

For instance, two cars we owned had a full vinyl interior, and two had a cloth interior. Both cloth interiors are torn up where the driver sits, whereas the vinyl interiors don't have any problems. Of course, we know vinyl is more durable than leather or cloth because they have been shoving it into fleet vehicles forever.

Except for having to pull everything from the dash to paint it the new body color, it doesn't appear to be that heavy of lifting to change the interior color of our cars.

As a note, you have a choice of ten "year correct" interior colors. Check out the Buick colors and wheels brochure I scanned and put on my website: CLICK LINK

Thanks for the link! That is some information I hadn't found yet!

This is my first Buick.... new or old. I'm having fun doing all the research.
