Changed points for the first time in many moons.....
Dwell was 38 on initial start, went to adjust down to 28 and went to 36 , kept turning adjuster and wouldn't go below 36 at which point it died. Re-adjusted, got it started, tried turning up toward 40 and same thing. Only runs in narrow range of 36-40....supposed to be 28-30. This is weird, tried another set of points/condenser and same deal!
Are the lobes too worn maybe? Coil bad?

    Bruce,
Open the distributor up, and position the high point of the distributor cam on the rubbing block of the points. Then take a look at the gap. Should be the width of a matchbook cover. That should get you very close. How sure of the meter are you, and are you reading the correct scale for 8 cylinder?

Can you try it using a different Dwell Meter?

Don't have another dwell meter but tried it on another car and it worked fine.....

Set the gap to .016 to get it started again.

Never seen anything like this......first my MSD box goes on the racecar and then dwell won't adjust.....what is there some electromagnetic field by my house?

a dumb question, but did you advance your timing to offset the reduction in dwell?

Yes, I did reset the timing....

Couple more dumb questions, are you absolutely sure the points are seated correctly on the mounting plate? No vacuum leaks? Dwell meter set to 8 cylinders? Good ground? How is it idling?

I'd set the gap using the feeler gauge method and then check the dwell meter to see what it says. Don't forget to turn off the key when you stick that feeler gauge in there!! HA!

    Yes, on all of those.
    Idles great.....
Set the gap to .016 and the dwell was 38.

I'm still thinking the lobes are worn down.

I guess I just put a Pertronix in and not worry about it...

I would recomend the pertronix. I have one with a MSD 6AL,fixed timings computer,2step rev limiter, and rpm switch to retard the timing. I love it and NO pionts to adjust or go bad. Mike Nussell

    Changed Points

I pulled my Pertronix LSC (Love Sensing Cam) because the car would not start worth a darn and blew out several mufflers when it backfired during startup. I went with points but chose a qulaity set of points by Blue Streak not the $2.00 set. The car runs great. I read somewhere that these cars did not require a lot of spark so the stock points were fine. By the way the Pertronix Coil also crapped out and left me stranded. I probably spent around three hundred dollars with mufflers and all on my Pertronix. By the way I went to their website and now they're in the muffler business... I wonder why? :puzzled: :blast: Pertronix

Bruce - not that this has anything to do with tea in China....but...

Last year before sellin the 'Sky I went to put a tune-up on it. I COULD NOT get the brand new set of points to work worth a damn. Ended up installing the old set back on and it ran fine.....then sold it, so I never got to figure it out

    Maybe defective parts ??
