I'd love some more power from my big buick, should I go with a rochester carb from a Riviera or a 2x4=$$$ or can I get a bigger Carter, or Edelbrock, suggestions?

    Carbs for Nailheads

I don't know why some of our Senior members haven't chimed in. According to what's been on the Board the last few months, a Quadra-jet carb & manifold are the Max Performance choice of most Nailhead Buick fans. The Dual Quad is Second in Power but First in Sex Appeal. Nailheads like a lot of Carb, so if you keep a standard square bore manifold you need a 750 or 850 carb. Edelbrocks are generally preferred over Holleys around here. TO get Max Perf out of a Q-jet it must be reworked by an expert, but this costs no more (usually less) than a new Carb. The Q-jet manifold for a Nailhead is a 1966 only part, a bit rare and pricey. In my Opinion a good Q-jet is wonderful. Good cruise response & mileage and, Bang! Power and Sound when you dump those Huge Secondarys. Holleys are OK if driven regularly (or Rebuilt Frequently) but don't do well on collector cars that sit most of the Winter and are driven only occasionally in good Weather. I hope this gives you some Ideas. keep Watching & you can go back (1 year) and read old posts.

When I was running my qjet, it did run good. When I put on the dual quads, I definitely noticed an increase in top end power. I would never switch back, cool factor or not. When these carbs are correctly set up, they definitely run stronger IMO.

The facts are that a qjet (even though I am not sure of this) is 750 cfm and two Carters at 550 cfm each = 1100 CFM. That's a gain of 350 CFM. Perhaps that's why the stock HP is 20 more with the dual quads. (360 vs. 340 HP) :bglasses:

Thanks for the info. I'd love to find some quads and manifold but whatever.

    Carter AFB cfm?

What was the factory Carter AFB cfm?

What is a direct aftermarket bolt on for the standard manifold?
