1957 Buick 364, carter four barrel, just went through my manual read about the heat tube from the manifold, knew I received it in a box of parts with my car, looked at the carb choke and discovered a choke cover with two electrical connections. ergo! electric choke conversion? Anyone else have the same? car is hard to start when cold so now I have to figure out why. Any thoughts out there? Motor runs as smooth as electric motor when warm, gets 20 mpg (Can.) 16mpg US. So when warm runs great. When cold, tough start, no fast idle.

I have used the Carter/Edelbrock electric choke "thermostat" with success on older AFBs. I set it lightly closed when cold. One wire terminal receives 12 volts with key on...do not use the ignition coil supply as it is resistor reduced to about 8 volts. The other terminal goes to ground. Once they are dialed in they are faithful. Frank:)

Of course, you disable the hot air 'cause with the electric choke it's just a vacuum leak.

I would expect the choke blade to snap firmly shut, then be opened when the engine starts by whatever mechanism is used for a choke pull-off. Some carbs use a pull-off piston in the choke housing, others have a separate diaphragm hung on the outside of the carb. Both work, but only if they're adjusted properly.

    disable hot air?

Interesting comment on the vacuum leak. If the tube is removed from the choke should the connection at the choke be sealed?
