I've only used dye a couple times to brighten up some faded carpet but used the same color. It worked......but........it didn't look anywhere near as good as new carpet. From my experience, save yourself some grief and just buy new carpet, you'll be much happier in the end.

    IMO, and from experience.
The "dye" is really paint, lacquer based, but flexible. It doesn't penetrate the material and make it a different color. It covers the old color with a new color, or as Bill said the same color.
Carpet is not wool or cotton, it is nylon. It is plastic. The pieces are very tiny which makes it flexible and it feels soft. But nothing is going to penetrate the tiny fibers and dye it. The color was put in when the nylon was being made while it was liquid before it became hard and made into fibers. So dying makes it hard to the touch. Hard because you can't paint each tiny fiber, you must paint whatever is in front of the spray gun or can. When it dries it feels hard. Even though the paint is flexible the carpet feels hard because as the paint drys it has glued a lot of the fibers into one bigger mass. It looks OK, I have done it, but it is not like new carpet. The dye works much better on a piece of vinyl material because the material is one big piece and therefore takes paint better than the millions of tiny fibers in the carpet.
All that said, I repeat, it does look better when dyed. And all this is just my opinion. I'm not an expert, just a schmuck who has tried it.

i used RIT black dye on my carpet in my gs. the new carpet (purchased by the previous owner of my gs, and not installed) was navy blue and i dyed it black. i used two packages of RIT dye in very hot water and applied with a wide brush. came out great.
