I finally toke the 71 out for a little drive yesterday. I just did a complete tune up on it and put a rebuilt carb on it. I thought is was all ready to go but now the car seems to smell fuelie and has black smoke. It also seems to have a studer inless you put your foot in it then cleans its self out but once you let off it slowly goes back to its old self. Do you think this is cause by it running to rich? Also how would you go about fixing this problem I am not to good with carbs so any help would be great. :TU:
    Thanks

    SkylarkSteve Hello Michael

Its definately running very rich. It would probably be helpful to know what kind of carb it is, though the problem could be any number of things. Is the choke sticking, make sure when the car is hot that the choke is fully open. Did you rebuild it yourself? The float level could be set two high causing it to run rich. If its a q-jet (this might apply to other carbs, I'm not sure) you might want to put some epoxy on the wells on the underside of the float bowl, they sometimes leak, pouring extra fuel into the intake. Those are some of the easy ones I can think of right now, Couldn't hurt to check them out and see if it eliminates the problem.

It is a stock carb. The carb was rebuilt by a carb shop in town. I tryied calling them but they have taken the rest of the week off. I was hoping it might be a easy fix. Maybe turning the screws on the carb but I cant remeber if you just turn one for the mixture or them both and which way. I took it to the carb shop because I thought they had a flow tester and it would be ready to go but I guess not. I don't see any gas leaking out but I will double check. The car was warm and the choke was off.
Do you still think that I need to try that?

I was hoping to get this fixed so I can take it to a hooters cruisein on sunday :Brow: . That would be the second cruise in for it. :beer

    SkylarkSteve Hello Michael

each screw controls either side of the carb, so you need to adjust them both to get the smoothest idle, turning them in makes it leaner and out makes it richer but I don't know how much it'll help because I don't think they could make it run that rich. You could still try it, just don't turn them in so far that they get tight, because then you'll damage them. Try giving the shop a call once they get back to see if they have any advice. They build the things so they should have a better idea. The only big problem I see with going to the cruise-in is the extra fuel thats going into your cylinders could be getting past your rings and diluting your oil. Occasionally my car has run very rich and I havn't noticed any damage from oil dilution when I took it apart, but its something to think about. If you do wanna go, just baby it and you could change your oil after you come back to reduce the threat of any damage.

Thanks Steven, I will call the shop first thing monday but I will try and see if making those adjustment's help at all first. I am crossing my fingers that they do. If not I will just have to drive the convertible. I was just trying to get this car out a few times before the winter came so I can find the bugs that still need to be worked out of it.
Thanks again for all your help
