carb issue? low idle, gas leak...

    ok, here's the story...i have a 68 special w/350-2 engine... rochester 2gv carb...

okay, it's always idled a bit low, but i know very little about servicing or adjusting carbs, so i haven't fooled with it, as it hasn't really presented a real problem...until now...

in the last week or two, i've noticed a hesitation when i accelerate from a slow coast, especially on a turn, and a couple of times so bad it stalled the car...my first thought was a bad fuel pump, but i no longer think this, since once it gets gas, it goes just fine, no hesitation at speed...

so, i replaced the fuel filter...no change...

changed plugs, dist. cap/rotor (points are next, i need a dwell meter)...engine runs better, but no change in fuel/idle problem...

well, yesterday it started something new...now, the idle is so low that first the gen light comes on (not enough engine rpm for the alternator to charge the battery?), then if i don't gas it soon enough the car dies...

i just adjusted the throttle screw (the one at the rear of the carb on driver's side) and that seemed to alleviate the problem (i know, it's only a band-aid)...

but then i noticed some unburned gas dripping from the throttle lever...any ideas where this might be coming from, and how to remedy the problem?

also...at the front of the carb are two screws that appear to be there for idle adjustment, but i can only find reference to one--the idle screw...so my question is, which of the two is the idle screw, and what is the other?

    thanks,
    scott

Sounds to me like it may be flooding and running too rich. Also your accelerator pump may not be working properly, causing the stumble. Time to send it out and get it rebuilt.

Don't exchange it, assuming yours is original, the core you get back may not be right and once yours is gone you can never get it back. I'm sure there is someone here on this site who does that kind of work.:Smarty:

I agree, it's rebuild time. Pop it off, and look in the yellow pages for carburetor rebuilding. Tell them you want the same carb back, shouldn't cost much, it only a 2bbl, with no electronics. The 2 screws in the front of the carb are idle mixture needles, 1 for each barrel. First things first, get the carb rebuilt.

    update

well, now it won't idle at all...this happened once before, and it turned out to be a piece of metal :eek2: keeping a needle from plunging (or at least that's the best way i can explain from the best i can remember, this has been about a year ago)...

so, it's time to rebuild the carb...or if i can find a 4barrel manifold and carb at the right price maybe i'll replace it...

anyway, thanks for the help, i'll keep you posted...
