Ok, I've been toying with the idea of changing the carb on my 401. I've been reading old posts, and realize that the current (stock) carb is rather restrictive. However, I would like to keep the original air cleaner, as I just restored it, and would feel like I wasted a lot of time and $ to simply replace it with an open element (not to mention the "cool" factor of the OEM air cleaner)! But, does anyone out there know of a good carb to use that would either mate up to my current air cleaner, or a way to get the edelbrock(or maybe even q-jet?) carbs to somehow fit, perhaps by using adapters. I wouldn't mind changing or playing with the intake manifold, but the air cleaner I would like to keep. Thanks for any input. Brett
Brett, I used a one inch ring spacer on top of my newer AFB's so that the original air cleaner would still fit....I cut a ring from a 2 pound coffee can....fits great!
Sounds like a plan. Its funny how sometimes the one of the simplest routes is often the most effective. With the setup you talked about, did you notice a good improvement over stock, even with the original air cleaner?? Brett
