Carb Choices?

Ok, I've been toying with the idea of changing the carb on my 401. I've been reading old posts, and realize that the current (stock) carb is rather restrictive. However, I would like to keep the original air cleaner, as I just restored it, and would feel like I wasted a lot of time and $ to simply replace it with an open element (not to mention the "cool" factor of the OEM air cleaner)! But, does anyone out there know of a good carb to use that would either mate up to my current air cleaner, or a way to get the edelbrock(or maybe even q-jet?) carbs to somehow fit, perhaps by using adapters. I wouldn't mind changing or playing with the intake manifold, but the air cleaner I would like to keep. Thanks for any input.

Brett, I used a one inch ring spacer on top of my newer AFB's so that the original air cleaner would still fit....I cut a ring from a 2 pound coffee can....fits great!

Sounds like a plan. Its funny how sometimes the one of the simplest routes is often the most effective. With the setup you talked about, did you notice a good improvement over stock, even with the original air cleaner??
