if it looks like the alternator. i'd recommend doing a semi one wire conversion. there is info all over the net on doing it. it gets rid of the voltage regulator. unless your going for a concors resto or the like it's a simple change.

Can you do a quick explanation of this? There is a plug in the back of my alternator. I was told that is internally regulated :Do No: doenst seem correct to me.

I bought a new regulator, had the alt tested and the battery. everything checked out fine, so i re-installed everyhting as well as the new regulatro and im still gettin 12 at the battery. When i rev it goes up to 13.

I re grounded everything and checked all the wires.

However, when i took the positive wire off of the battery while the engine was running it died right away. Is this the alternator going bad? The car would stop turning over after a few turns of the key.

Engine dying with a pulled cable indicates a charging problem, which still leaves it between alternator/regulator.

When you key on, does the alternator light on the dash go on? I seem to remember something about a bruned-out alt bulb causing charging problems as it functions as a resistor in the circuit. :Do No:

Key on as in not to crank, just before the car turns over with engine off? This bulb does come one. I think its the gen light. Maybe ill replace the alt and see what happens. I would have done that first but it checked out ok at kragens.

Yep, that's the idea. Sorry this has turned out to be so much of a pain. It's probably time to start inspecting the condition of the wiring as well, particularly the crimped terminals inside the plastic connectors at bot the alt & reg.

can i run a wire from the back of the alt (red post) directly to the battery and see if that causes the voltage to jump to 14 volts.

There by seeing if the path to the regulator is messed up or if the batt doesnt show and increase then i can determine that its the alternator?

I get an 80s big car Buick regular alt and be done with it. To easy to hook up unless your trying to have an original show car. You then need a fake system, looks like you got the old style but ya don't.

can you explain this a little more please? im picking up a new alternator today.

Keep in mind that im running an air suspension that draws from the battery when i turn the compressor switch on.

Its easier as all the guts are in the alt, you hooke one wire to the batter and hook up a switch power wire to the key and your done. Charge ho

How manys amps is your alt now? just stock?
    anyone know the amps?

    i believe its 53amps.

Thats weak, 80-100+ is the norm.
The big junkyard score is a GM CS144 for cheap,
144AMP alt. I run the upgrade 108amp alt from autozone, only $60
lifetime warranty. As usually the 100+ ones cost loot.
