Subject:: Car Thieves Seems that car thieves have found yet another way to steal your car or truck without any effort at all. The car thieves peer through the windshield of your car or truck, write down the VIN # from the label on the dash, go to the local car dealership and request a duplicate key based on the VIN #. I didn't believe this e-mail, so I called a friend at Chrysler Dodge and pretended I had lost my keys. They told me to just bring in the VIN #, and they would cut me one on the spot, and I could order the keyless device if I wanted. The Car Dealer's Parts Department will make a duplicate key from the VIN# and collect payment from the thief who will return to your car. He doesn't have to break in, do any damage to the vehicle, or draw attention to himself. All he has to do is walk up to your car, insert the key and off he goes to a local Chop Shop with your vehicle. You don't believe it? It IS that easy. To avoid this from happening to you, simply put some tape (electrical tape, duct tape or medical tape) across the VIN Metal Label located on the dash board. By law, you cannot remove the VIN, but you can cover it so it can't be viewed through the windshield by a car thief. I urge you to forward this to your friends before some other car thief steals another car or truck. I slipped a 3 x 5 card over the VIN # "
I first read about that in the local news a couple of years ago. They went out and tried it at some dealerships and were successful at some. You could always drive old cars...
I went to a Chevy dealer a month ago and they had a real clear policy framed on the wall. It stated you had to show proof of ownership (title or registration along with photo ID). So I think at most dealerships, they have gotten on the security bandwagon. This Chevy dealership also had a line on their sign stating they could refuse to cut them if they felt like it, they "would not be an accessory to theft." On other bulletin boards I have seen this on, others have chimed in stating it was illegal to cover the VIN in their municipality. I just don't worry about it. If they want it, they want it. That is what full coverage insurance is for.
I know NJ, NY and other states have the VIN right on the inspection or registration sticker on the window.....
Door key only If its an new car they can only get in the car because the key has a chip in it that needs to match the car. I dont know what it takes but I had to due this because I locked my keys in the car. You need the key with the chip and have to program it to the car. I dont know how that is done but I had to buy a chipped key to install my auto start. I hope they still my truck so I can buy a diesel truck next time. I seem to be on the road pulling cars alot lately!!!!!!!!!!!
I call B.S. Unless they go to the specific dealership that you bought the car at there is no way they can get your key code. Even then some of the dealerships don't keep that info as they give it to the owner with the rest of the paperwork (key knock-outs). On top of that so many of the new cars have id chips built into the base of the key and you pretty much need an original key to put in the scanner in order to even start punching/cutting new keys. I guess it's possible but it seems like a good way for the car dealers to stall the would be car molesters while the police come to visit them....
I work in a GM buick dealership and its true anyone can go to any dealership anywhere and get a key made. As long as Im the true owner I can have a key made at any dealership in ther country. Its not BS
If you have a tech2 and a screwdriver you can still steal any new GM car. Just disable the fuel cutout via the tech2 and turn the lock cylinder.
Id I have been asked for ID every time I have had a key cut at a dealership. However, Im sure it would not take much effort for a theif to get around this. Just keep going to dealerships until you find one that will do it without ID or even just lay a couple hundred on them and say you forgot your ID and your in a bind. Trust me money talks and when they hit the magic dollar number that person at the dealership may go for it, thinking in their mind that they are helping someone out. I think that is a great idea to cover your vin, Im gonna do that today. Dennis
I cover my Vin# I had the same thing with my car ,I had locked my keys in the car and when I went to a Dealership and told them what happened they asked for the owners card I told them that is was locked up in the car's glove box. They made me the key anyway! :jd: They never asked me for any I.D. or told me to come back with proof of any sort. It is my understanding that by Law they are required for proof of ownership and if your owners card is locked in the car then they take a photo copy of your license and ask you to return to the dealership with proof of ownership with in 24 hours. This what I understand to be Pa. Law anyway? o No: It really burns me up :af: that lazy good for nothing animals can get away with this kind of stuff, Nothing is off limits to them anymore. If they would put half the effort into working an honest job that the do into thinking of ways to rip people off they would feel the same way most of us do! I Say "HANG EM HIGH" or make bigger prisons! Don
I don't think so. I just had another set of keys made for my wifes 1999 Olds 88. It's a chipped key. (and really expensive, $40) All they asked was year and make and cut the key. It worked perfectly.
