Hey this is my first time posting on this thread. I have a 1973 buick electra with the original 455 in it. When I first bought this buick, it ran great. I noticed that the water pump had a small leak in it. So I went to change out the pump and I broke 3 bolts. It was a one owner car and he bought it back in 73' so as you can imagine the bolts were rusted all the way through. So I had to replace the whole timing chain cover. So when I got everything back together it would not run. So after months of trying to get it back running, I finally got it to crank up but it will only run for a little while and then it would backfire and cut off. I think the air/fuel mixture screws are off and I don't know how to reset them. Can anyone point me in the right direction, it would be greatly appreciated.
I would play with the timing there’s a thread here that tells you how to do that. Then I would tune the carb, for that I use YouTube videos there’s a lot of info on how to do it, it’s pretty easy.
Leave the carb alone. Get the distributor right before messing with something not related to what you took apart. Keep in mind that in your first sentence "When I first bought this buick, it ran great."
You probably put the distributor in wrong and now the static timing is not close enough for it to run. Post your location, help might be close.
I agree, the carb has nothing to do with this since you didn’t mess with it. Like others have said, it’s your ignition timing since you removed your distributor. Are you familiar with engines or mechanically inclined? It’s easy to get ignition timing off.
