Have a 58 buick and for some reason it will run just fine setting and then when I put it in gear weather it be drive or reverse it dies. I tried turning the idle up it kind helps but when you put it in gear it snaps your neck because the idle is set to high. any thoughts? is this maybe a carb issue or ???? but once its in gear and moving it runs fine. setting it runs fine just that point of shifting into gear.
Sounds like a vacuum leak to me. Put a gauge on it and see what the reading is. Check under the hood for a bad vacuum hose or a vacuum cap that may have fallen off. You may have a bad carb base gasket or the vacuum leak may be internal to the carb First things first though. Put a gauge on it and see how many inches of vacuum you have
if you don't have a gauge handy, here's a quick and dirty test to check for a leak. Take the air cleaner off and start the car. Slowly start covering up the top of the carb with your hand and restricting the air to the engine. As you do this, see if the engine's idle comes up. It sounds like a signifigant leak so there should be a dramatic increase in rpm.
Thanks for the tip. I am on my way to grab a cheap tach to set my RPM ill grab a vacuum gauge while im out. Ill let you know how it goes
