Can the 200R4 be rebuilt to shift hard into 2nd gear?

My brother has an 87 GN and has had his trans rebuilt twice. Both times by different people. Both times it doesn't shift hard into 2nd. Although it will shift hard into 3rd and 4th.

Is there anyone in the Maryland state area that has a good reputation for making these shift hard into 2nd?

    Thanks,
    Tim

First off, make sure the 1st guy really rebuilt and reinstalled your BRF coded trans (and original valve body). A stock BRF has a nice firm 1-2 shift.

If he didn't (or he did and the 2nd guy didn't), you need to have a long, very persuasive conversation with him.

Then, post your question on TurboBuick in the trans section. Several known builders there. One might be close to you.

    Dwayne,

    What is BRF?

Also what codes are we looking for?

    Thanks,
    Tim

BRF is the code on the trans ID tag for the GN. There is also a GN specific code on the valve body. I can't recall what that one is, though.

Attached photo is not GN specific, just an idea of what to look for.

I see. That will help very much. I will go look at it tomorrow.

    Thank you very much.

The transmission servo is also different for a Grand National than the other 200R4 transmissions.

The valve body is the meat and potatoes:Brow: You looking for BR1, BR2 and most desired BR3 valve body.

It's very common for the wrong tranny or VB to be placed in the car, it makes a huge difference to have the correct set-up. These cars are very hard on transmissions:3gears:

There's a name from the past! Dave Husek did my trans in my Turbo Regal around 1990. Used to leave rubber into second. Last trans I built for the car.

He's good and a Long Island boy too!

    Thank you very much guys.

We checked the trans, it is a BRF.

My brother is going to check the valve body today and see what it is.

    Thanks for your help.
