Can anyone fill me in on these "anti theft" lock knobs?

These things originally came from a Chrysler dealer. I figure they are from the 60's or early 70's. Basically you lock your doors and push this lever in to keep someone from using a coathanger to lift up this knob. The thing I can't figure out is how the heck would you unlock your doors with your key as the knob wouldn't be able to pop up! Any ideas? Does anyone know if this is a Chrysler or a generic item for all old cars?
    Thanks

I'm only guessing, but I'd think that either it would release from pressure below it or that the lock is strong enough to move it.
