Welcome aboard Steve! Give us more details on your combination (compression, gear, weight, induction, head work).

thanks craig, start with compression, about 8.5 to 9.5 running forged dish pistons harden rod bolts stock intake and hooker headrs, stock converter on a TH400,thinkingbout possible 2500 stall. this is all in a 72 gs with 3.42 gears heads will be stock except for stg 1 valves and port matching

I'd say something in the range of the TA 112 or maybe better TA 212. Check out TA's web site and give them a call. Shop around and get everyone's advice. Contact the cam companies they will ask you all the details of your car to determine the best cam they have for your application. If they don't ask you lots of questions about your combination go somewhere else to buy your cam!

You want to build good cylinder pressure so, in my opinion, the TA 413 cam is not the ideal cam for you, the IVC event is too late for your compression and will not build enough cylinder pressure. I run this cam with 10.5:1 compression and it fits my application nicely.

As far as converters I recommend the TCI Breakaway, its affordable and works great on the street. Stall should be around 2700 rpm's with a BBB, foot brake stall is ~2100 rpm's. I've had higher stall converters but was unable to "hook" with my suspension set-up. I get 1.80 - 1.82 sec. 60' on street radials and boxed lower control arms. Good luck.

    Steve,
Besides Craigs sugestions, you might want to look around for a B4B intake manifold,it will definately help your combo.
What size exhaust will you be running with those Headers?

Please take your time and do some research on this site, theres tons of information by very knowledgable and dedicated Buick enthusiasts on this site with tons of info.
    Good Luck to ya:TU:

    Steve,

What's your elevation in Pueblo? Be careful with cam selection if you want to run power brakes, etc. because there is a loss of vacuum at elevation.
The good news is you can run more compression at altitude without worrying about detonation.

My Craftsman vacuum gauge instructions state 1" vacuum loss per 1000'.

The 226/238 cam I run pulls 12-13" at 5500' and runs brakes and all fine, idles at 700rpm or less and is very streetable with good power. I'm running measured 11:1 compression on 92 octane with this cam at this elevation. I just add Avgas when I go to Vegas.

Thanks for the post gary, to answer your question my altitude is at 4800 ft not much higher than where your at. how much head work have you had done? are you running a high stall converter, what intake and who`s cam? Im not planning on running over 10 to one on compression. any other tips you have would be appreciated.

    Steve,

    Sorry for the late reply.

I have mild ported '70 iron heads from PAE (Jim Burek) that flow 260/190 with Stage 1 valves, Ross 11:1, file-fit rings, B4B, TA 1-7/8 headers (Jet Hot), 800 Qjet by John Osborne Performance (JOP@aol.com), Mallory 140 pump, MSD Billet Dist and 6AL, Taylor 8mm wires, TA roller rockers (probably not necessary), oiling mods, TA booster plate and regulator, GM truck fan clutch, 4-core radiator w/7-blade fan, TH400 Variable pitch (1600/3200 Tri-Shield converter), 3.55 (now with new 12-bolt, Mark Williams axles, Eaton posi, big 9" Ford bearings)...

I got the cam and pistons from Scott Brown at Straightline Performance. They're also available from PAE. Grooved cam bearings from TA Performance.

It isn't the quickest car around the list but I expect to run very low 12s this year with stickier tires (and that's been my goal all along). And it's been dead-solid reliable for 4 years or so. Drives very well and pulls good vacuum even at this altitude and has required almost no tuning since I put the JOP Qjet on it. Enough rumble to know it's not a stock cam and has surprised more than a few.
