What Compression are you running? What Size Carb and Rear Gears? Also Do you have a stall convertor.

well guessing by your name you have a

    71 Skylark Custom
    350/4 - compression 8.5 to 1
    stock transmission - Stock Convertor
    and either - 254 or 273 gears

Basically a stock setup. If your looking for more power I would consider doing these items first:

    Upgrading
    Dual Exhaust
Changing gears to a 308 or 323 ratio

The lack of the items above really hinder the selection of cams available for your 71.

Hope this gives you some ideas.

Buickman71 Do you have headers? I think a TA 212 would be a good cam for you to start.

Buick 350 you have a nice start I also think the TA 212 just due to the compression level. Everything else looks good.

Since you are talking about 350 cams, does anyone have the specs on the orginal '70 350 cam, lobe, duration etc? I can't seem to find it anywhere, and my Brother was asked by the engine builder training guy at GM Powertrain in Tonawanda, apparently he is doing research or something for work. Thanks!

Wish I could answer it for you Roberta but unfortunatly I cant. However I do have a 70 SP 350 on the stand... I am doing a rebuild on it and slowly finishing up my collection of parts for it.

    Hey buick350!
I noticed your build up, and you said your compression is still stock, I would not use the TA 310 cam, that thing would be a dog, plus idle quality would be nill:eek2: I have that cam in mine, but my block has been decked .050, heads have been cut .030, and my pistons are 9.2 to 1 at .020 deck height, my deck height is .005. So you can see my compression is up there quite a bit, and Mine idles with a decent lope when warm, and a huge lope when cold.
I would recommend a smaller cam with your stock compression ratio:grin: You'll be much happier with the performance. Mark

should i just wait and save for higher compression pistons(i am on a budget)i still go to high school.or do guys think i can hit low 14s or high 13s with my compression ratio a ta 212 and some 373.i also want to know if 373s will end my power band too soon?and this engine is in a 70 buick skylark.thanx

and yeah my own guess is it will hit low 15s high 14s but i would like to know if some tricks will help me get faster than that with the products i mentioned or just get different pistons all together.

I would go with a milder cam. Give TA a call, tell them your combo, and they can set yah up with the proper cam. Personally, I'd stay away from 3.73's, I'd go with at least 3.23 to 3.42, but no higher.
Buick motors dont need the snot revved outta 'em to make power. Mark:grin:

hey mark.thanxs by the way whats your combo and have you taken it to the strip?

My combo is: Block decked .050 for .005 deck height. Heads have been milled .030 with TA's big stainless valves, bowls opened up, intake and exhaust ports on heads and ports on intake all gasket matched, Im using ARP head studs also. The intake is TA's Stage 1. Pistons are Sterling H522NP (if I remember correctly) Rods are the cap screw style with ARP bolts. Cam is TA's 310, TA's Roll Master billet gears and chain, with Chevy style hydraulic lifters, there the quietest, no noise at start up even after months of sitting, dont bother listening to the hype about "Buick specific" lifters, they're all .842 dia. lifter bodies, the pushrod cup depth is a bit deeper in the Chevy type lifters, so you'll have to use adjustable pushrods, but you should be checking lifter preload anyway when going to a non- stock cam, so you'll end up using adjustables, or ordering custom length ones. Cam bearings are TA's grooved ones. Crank is cross drilled. Oil pump is stock, with booster plate. Headers are TA's 1-5/8. Carb is Holley 750 vac sec, its dead reliable, but I think my original Q-Jet would work better when I get the extra cash to have it fixed by one of the Q-Jet gurus (air horn is warped) With the holley, the vaccuum secondaries its either too soon, or not soon enough they open:mad: Converter is a TCI 2400 to 2600 stall. Rear is 3.42 Chevy 12 bolt I got for free years ago with limited slip. Ignition is all MSD, 6A box, billet distributor, coil, wires. I was using HEI, but had issues with the HEI cap grounding against the upper rad hose when it got damp (very weird!) I talked to MSD, and they said its pretty common, something having to do with the carbon black in the hoses, quite the electrical show:grin: I havent had it to Norwalk yet, really wanting to try and get it there, but with the house, and other projects, plus gas prices:mad: its not a high priority right now, and its damn frustrating too, I dont think I'll be able to attend this years Buick race day weekend, which sucks, cause Roberta does an excellent job:beer
So thats about all I can think of right now, gotta go trim carpeting now in our living room:rolleyes: hope this helps yah, Mark
