I put a new gas tank and sending unit on my car. The gauge will read about 3/4 when the tank is full. Do I need to drop the tank and bend the float arm to calibrate the gauge to match the actual volume of fuel in the tank???? I searched for a thread but did not find anything. Thanks in advance for your help. Jim

Get a ruler. Measure from the bottom of the tank to under the lip of the fuel sender. As an example say it's 10". Then 1/2 tank would be 5". 3/4 tank would be 7.5". Then check the sender with the dimensions. Will be right on EVERY TIME.
I have the same problem. New tank and sending unit and it is a battle to get the gauge to read full. When it reads close to empty I still have well over 8 gallons left. I just live with it.
If you have the rally gauges, the fuel (as well as all) can read erratic because the glycerine damping material has dried up in the movement. Can fix that or alter the number of windings of nichrome wire on the white plastic piece. Both major pain in the ass to correct.
Your tank will never be filled to the top. For example, a 10" deep tank may only fill to 8". When I had my custom tank made for my GS, the man from Fuel Safe asked me how much fuel I thought this tank would hold. I told him that it measures out to 19.45 gallons. He said to expect 5%-20% less depending on my fill neck design and the sensitivity of the fuel fill nozzle. I can't get more than 14.5 gallons in my tank. You need to know where full level actually is.
Well, not one of my favorite activities but I will run most of the gas out of it, drop the tank, guesstimate the level would be if the tank were full and then set the float to that. Thanks Guys!!!!!
