My trim tag for my 70 GS 455 reads as follows: 68 - Burnished Saddle A - White Vinyl top (I believe that's correct) Just curious if I'm correct with the vinyl top code, and if so, has anyone else seen a GS with this color and vinyl top combo? Thanks in advance
Yes A is white vinyl top. I have a 1970 GS Stage 1 project car that is burnished Saddle with a white vinyl top. Rare and uncommon for sure.
That is definitely an odd color combo, but according to this chart, surprisingly a recommended (R) combination. Rich & Rob, what color interiors do your cars have? Seems anything but Blue or green are also recommended with Burnished Saddle. In this chart the one thing surprisingly that isn't addressed is vinyl top/interior color combos. Interestingly, Regal Black & Glacier White exterior was compatible with ANY vinyl top or interior color and since the interior & top colors aren't addressed, that could create some really bizarre combos (e.g. Black lower paint, green top, blue interior) that would seemingly not fall under the "non-recommended" category. Somewhat a different topic, but Rich, from other posts I've seen, I know you know a bit about the "Z" codes on the trim tag ahead of the interior code which as I understand it indicated a non-recommended interior color, but then I was told that it could also represent other things? I've seen two (2) Sherwood/Dark Saddle cars, both with brown vinyl tops (incl. one of my old cars) that had a "Z" as they seemingly should've based on the Sherwood and Dark Saddle combo. although until I saw this chart I wasn't exactly sure what combination of paint/top/interior was driving it whereas I've seen a couple "Z" trim tags that don't make any sense based on this chart - One with a white interior (Fire Red/White top) and one with a black interior (one of my current cars - 45-48 Seamist Green with a Sherwood Green painted top). Based on this chart, both white and black interiors are compatible with any exterior color. Now that I've had two of these "Z" cars I've become curious about it and somewhere I started a chart of "Z" Trim Codes/Color Combos that I've personally seen and also from info on the Stage 1 registry. I'll have to ask Todd if Jason Line's convertible had it. One day I'll start a thread on here about it and collect whatever info people are willing to share - I assume these cars are few and far between. Until recently, I'd only ever seen the "Z" on '70 Flint Built cars, but recently saw a '71 (may have also been a Leeds built car) with it. Definitely some odd combos out there, but the 2 above didn't make sense - Any ideas? I've wondered if someone simply forgot to take the "Z" out after the previous stamp was made as I assume this was all done manually back then.
Dano You are correct on your assumptions, I too have seen Z in front of interior trim codes of cars that had regular color combo's. Could also be a late change alert, meaning order changed late in the game to a different interior color choice by the customer. Also, my 70 GS Stage 1 Burnished saddle car with white vinyl top has burnished saddle buckets console interior.
My car has a burnished saddle interior but exterior is Harvest Gold. It is acceptable says the documents above.... but looks like green is also.
Just noticed my 70 gs455 paint code 75 75 has a interior color z124 so if I recall correctly my fire red car had a red top and tan interior when it was born I knew it was converted to black previously but I think the paint code means a red top ? and I could see why the z code special order might have applied to a red car with tan guts weird combo if i am reading this right
I had thought of that possibility too, but on my car, assuming that they didn't change (downgrade) the interior configuration (straight bench) the only options were Black (R), Sandalwood (A), or Blue (-) and I can't imagine someone would've originally ordered blue w/Seamist and despite not being the biggest fan of Seamist/Black, I'm glad they didn't order Sandalwood. Someone told me the "Z" could indicate other abnormalities, and this car would qualify as abnormal - Maybe they just thought it was such an oddball car, it deserved a "Z" anyway.
Yes, 75-75 would be Fire Red bottom & top. So that's pretty interesting as Sandalwood (124 - Straight Bench) is an Approved (A), although not a Recommended (R) color for Fire Red (75) yet it still got the "Z". What assembly plant?
The no cost standard straight bench in 1970 was offered only in Sandalwood, Blue and Black. Sandalwood light tan interior would look great with Fire red exterior paint.
There was a '70 Stage 1 project car on ebay in 2012 that was also a Fire Red car 75 75 with a code 124 sandlewood straight bench seat but it didn't have a Z on the trim tag. It was built much earlier in the model year 10D (4th week October '69) at Flint. The car was a major project but I thought it would be very attractive if restored to that original color combination. Sorry to get us further off of the original topic.
I think my Wildcat is that color combo, but the roof is painted White. Inside is beige. I've decided to keep it that way as the Brown has grown on me
