I have a 71 chevy 12 bolt out of a monty. It is single spin now. I would like to weld the tubes to the housing and weld some ford ends on. (I can weld) I would like 33 spline axles/bearings and a good posi unit and 3.73 gears for street strip. also a strong yoke and cap for gear side carrier. build it right the firt time! I was woundering if i can get all the stuff i need from one place as a kit all in one, sorta thing.
currie has nice billet housing ends that use big ford bearings and gm brakes will bolt on to them. just have to open up the center hole in the backing plate for the bearing to fit through. also you will need a nice through bar to center up everything off of your carrier bearing journals.
Just PM I have it all. Some things to think about- Do you have a narrowing bar needed to keep the Housing end on straight when WELDING the housing end onto the housing. A lot of 12 bolt Chevy rears are bent and tweaked from years of hard pounding. If you do not get that end on correct the axle bearing will wear prematurely and seals will leak also. We have 33 spline MOSER axle packages Housing ends with the GM small bolt pattern but uses FORD LARGE bolt in axle bearings like you want. 33 spline Eaton carrier or full spool gears rebuild kits etc. Site is totally DOWN? Oh crap...have to check that. Remember I have never had the store up. Nephew has been doing college then girl friend...NOW might be marriage. I MAY NEVER HAVE THAT SITE STORE UP. God help me. Jim- JD
God help you is right !! Monzaz,, Your mail box is full and i cant send u anything. I do not have the bar or the discs that the caps hold down to keep the bar straight. Maybe someone has the discs that i could rent and i can buy the right bar from the local steel mill to keep shipping down.
Yeah you will want to make a jig to hold the rear end all square while you weld it up... For me it was not worth the hassle. I just saved up and bought the Moser 12 bolt aftermarket housing and had Jim build it with parts to handle lots of power. Sure it cost some money but I will have no isses with it for a good while I am sure... I could have spent $400 to find a core 12 bolt or $900 for an aftermarket housing that is WAY better, no need to weld, has better Ford bearings, all sorts of things that are better than the Chevy 12 bolt... Jim even built mine to bolt right in my Skylark wihout changing anything as far as driveshaft yokes etc... My price quote here: View attachment 254953 It showed up all ready to fill with oil and go:
Sean is right - thats the way to do it. 12 years ago I did the same after grenading 3 10 bolts and finally had a 12 bolt totally built for me and it wasn't much less that even without the new housing.
