Went racing yesterday with the Massholes. I have some pics for everyone, but first some questions about my 70. Ok, first we got some race fuel from a guy at the local airport which we thought was 100 octane and (After I got two gallons in my car) he told me it was 130 octane! I had maybe just under half a tank of 93 octane in the car. What if anything would this do to the performance of a stock 8.5 to 1 engine? Ok, next; stock motor, new performance transmission by JW and new 12 bolt with 3.90's. With a 3.64 rear the car went 13.3, with a 3.08 rear the car went 13.4,13.5,13.6 then came taller tires and the car was running 13.7,13.8. Ok,my 60 foot times were always 2.0 maybe the occasional 1.9...Yesterday with the 3.90's and the new tranny I had a 1.75, 1.77,1.77 and a 1.82 for 60 foot times!!! YEAH! But my e.t. was 13.6 @ 95; what the...talk to me gearheads... was the fuel a problem or am I not making any top end power or is a stock motor not making power from 5000 rpm to 6000 rpm?? Any suggestions are welcome...come on now.... I'd like a 12 second pass at Cecil County!

Yes, that picture is of Paul(Buick Wagon) & Myself(D STAGE 2 455). This was the first time I raced my Skylark in 3 years. It turned out to be a good day, I went three rounds and beat my personal best ET.

Alan and Doug, here's the problem... I got this motor off a guy in Conn. without any details. For 1200.00 bucks how could I go wrong? It runs in the mid 13's and sounds great; you've heard it. I've been to the track with it like 20 times this summer, drive it just about every day, and kill it at night!! Wish I knew what I had in there, and hope to build something in the future. I'm looking at another BB this weekend, at least he has the specs on this one.

Wish I could have made it. I actually didn't know there was an all GM Shootout this past Sunday. Looks like there was some nice stuff.

Several things here. With only 8.5 compression race fuel is NOT helping-- actually hurting. More octane than you need slows down the burn and hurts HP. 8.5 should run fine all day long on 92-93. Don't waste $ on higher octane with that compression.
My car actually went faster with 2.93s than with 3.90s, (although, I was also a better tuner after the 2.93s went in). 3.90 is probably too much gear for you. Did you lose MPH?
Lastly, sounds like whatever cam is in that motor (stock?) ain't making power above 5000rpm. Try shifting at 5000 next time out. I bet you'll be pleasantly surprised. With non-ported heads, stock intake, MT headers, and 224 cam, shifting above 5000 did nothing for me.

    P.S. How's Kevin's Salem Special doing?

Hey Nick, good to hear from you! I hear ya about the race fuel. And also agree that the stock motor is'nt making much power after 5000. Ok so I shift at 5000 from 1st to 2nd and from 2nd to 3rd but i'm going through the traps at like 5700. Too much gear and not enough power right? I'm just pissed because I thought that for every tenth you gained in your 60 foot time was good for two tenths on top. With 1.77 60 foot times should'nt I be alot faster than 13.6@95? THAT"S IT!!! I'M BRINGING MY HEADS TO GREG GESSLER!!! TONIGHT!!! HA,HA. Ok now I'm going to throw Kevin under the bus. I had to get some tools out of his trunk and I saw all the AC parts I gave him and the ones he collected for you! Get on him Nick! Start e-mailing and PMing him mercilessly.....
