I have a 1955 Buick Century and was wondering why it is staying engaged while the engine is running. I have lost my manual and need to find one, but I need to figure this out now. ANy help would be great. It has the starter on the gas pedal. I havn't messed with the car in 11 years and it wants to run, but the starter is staying engaged.?

    Thanks Jensen

if yours is the old kick starter it is probably the spring on the contact switch has rusted & isnt letting the contact release.other problems to look for, asbestos from the clutch or just plain 'ol rust on the armature splines, snap ring collar damaged or missing, allowing the drive to travel past the splines...take your pick:Do No: bottem line is the starter must come out:ball:
