I was just wondering what the difference between a Skylark & a Special is?
What year did the specials end-Was it 1969?When did they begin?
    Thanks

Specials were around in the '50s. I'm not sure when the name ended, but I do know that for years, if I wanted a GS part for my '70, like a radiator hose, I'd have to have the parts guy look up parts for a "1970 Buick Special" in the parts book and computer, because for some reason, at the chain stores (lappen's Auto palace, etc) they had no idea what a GS was. Now, for some equally bizarre reason, they actually have "Gran Sport" for 1970, which still isn't the right name, but at least they're on the right track

    Skylark vs Special

Jeff, In '68 the Buick name Special was changed to SpecialDeluxe.I'm pretty sure that 1969 was the last year for the model name "SpecialDeluxe". I do remember that when I was a kid.....my Dad's favorite car was a 1954 Special. ..........John

There were also Specials made into the '70s- I think I saw a '78 before (looked like an Apollo). I know I saw a '76 also, it was boxy like a Regal.

    1936

Buick first used the Special name in 1936 and then every year until dropped in 59 & 60 revived from 1961 - dropped in 1970 and was revived in 1975 on the Century Platform on the 2 door coupe last year used 1979 - I think I have it all right

To answer your question about the difference between the Skylarks and Specials, I'll assume that you are asking about 1960's A-body models.

In that case, the Special was the "base" series and the Skylarks were the more "upgraded" series. The Skylarks usually had more exterior trim, a more fancy interior, and more options available. The body panels were basically the same.

However, you also had some classy Special models, like Keith's very attractive Special Deluxe, and the GS Californias, which used Special bodies and interiors.
