I removed a posi from a 1972 skylark and the car had an oldsmobile drivetrain and the crown gear has 41 A 15 ZL 053. Would anyone know if this is the Buick rear end thanks Bill
As long as you got the whole rear, just bolt it in. Pic would help. Also, axle code on pass tube will tell you what it is.
rear end Thanks George, It must be an 8.5 as if i'm correct they didn't have 2.73 in the 8.2. I am going to go with 2.93 's in my 70, which is an open rearend. The other carrier is a posi. Would the72 rear[2.73] fit in the 1970 rearend. thanks Bill
No interchange on center sections between 8.2 and 8.5. If I were you, install a complete 8.5" rear in your 70. You have better parts selection, better prices and you can use the posi unit from any 71-87 GM 8.5" rear with posi. I have this listed on our website. Many 81-87 GM full size wagons had posi units in them. When installing the 8.5" into your 70 car, you will need to shorten the driveshaft about 1". If you have the two piece driveshaft, get rid of it and install the one-piece (solid tube) driveshaft.
rear end interchange Actually I have seen it before. some one put a 8.5 3 series posi in a 8.2 hosing and used the 2.78 gears. They just shimmed the carrier over to work. Couldn't believe it if I did not see it. No I am not saying it is a coorect way to do things...But it did run and drive. the axles were even the original ones which I thought were sloppy in the chevy tyoe 28 spline c-clip splines. BUT it did work and it was in good condition when parted out. Jim You see alot of crazy stuff doing restorations and part outs....lol :spank: ou:
Whaaat?? That one's got me scratching my head uzzled: (the not-so-thin part) How'd they not just gouge the heck out of the housing or even get the cover on? Better yet, did they use the 8.5 pinion too? Now vise-versa maybe, 8.2 into 8.5 (still scratchin') but regardless thats just goofy.
posi 8.5 in a 8.2 Ok here is the deal. The 8.5 and the newer 8.2 (pontiac gears at least) use the same 10 bolt pattern and bolts. The pinion is the only difference. They took a 410408 and bolted the 2.78 ring gear (8.2) to the unit. then they shimmed it to work. The carrier bearings on 8.2 and 8.5 are the same. The worry I had was the splines the 8.2 splines are usually a slightly different and fit loosely into the newer 8.5 28 spline units. It did work but I think if you really laid so torque to the spline they would spin out. I did see the casting digitswere slightly rubbing The big '8s' cast into the unit were scratched up from the passenger bearing cap. BUT IT DID WORK! Maybe if you replace the axles with a 1971 1972 buick old rear it would all work. It is something to experiment with though....lol.
