Hi,Im a new member here,and I was wondering if you guys could help me identify a buick motor.Im going to look at a 83 cutlass later on today.I know it has a buick motor in it and it has points.The owner says he thinks its a 350 but he doesnt know anything about cars at all.Where are the numbers located on the motor?Anything else I should look for?
Hi, welcome to the board! Feel free to post a first name, we're a friendly bunch here Take a look behind the intake manifold. If it's a 350, there will be "350" cast into the bell housing. Also the distributor is in the front if a Buick engine. Some year 455's will have a 455 cast into that same location, but I'm not sure what years. Also, the Buick 350 valve covers have 6 bolts, while the 455 has only 5 bolts. These are probably the simplest way to tell. BTW, there were no Buick 350's in 1983, or 455's. 80 is last year for the 350, and 76 for the 455.
Look around over hereat the Buick Performance. Should be a few pictures, showing you how to ID your engine. One of the quickest ways to figure out if you have a Buick 350 under the hood of that '83 - the Buick has the distributor in the front!!:Smarty: Chevy, Olds and Pontiac had the dist. in the rear.
Also, around late 1974 if I recall correctly, Buick began to use the HEI ignition rather than the points type. If the distributor's in the front but straight up and down, I beleive that would be a Cadillac engine. I think
Right,I knew it was a buick motor,I just wasnt sure how to tell if it was a 350,455,or 401,or whatever else buick made.It does have points on it meaning its pre 74,and the previous owner is pretty sure its a 70 350.It has a 2 barrell carb as well,what was that year motor and carb combo rated at?It runs good doesnt smoke or tick or knock.
