I went to our local car show this week and in rolls a 1971 Buick GSX driven by a woman. The car is MAGNIFICENT! Yellow with black stripes that aren't all that glossy. Car has 40K on the clock and is all original. Options inlcude-4-speed, A/C, chrome rear view mirror, regular rear bumper, buckets with console for 4-speed, Stage 1. I told her and her neighbor about V8buick and they said they would check it out. BTW the wife doesn't own the car its her husband's but she know how to drive a 4-speed. :bglasses: :3gears:
Just read an article in Musclecar Enthusiast magazine on spotting faked cars and they mentioned that Saturn Yellow was a 1970 only color was not used in 1971 or 1972 is this true? Or did the magazine make a big oops and accuse many of our members of having fakes?
Oh, just noticed the mention of a chrome mirror on the door, the article also states that all GS and GSX cars had body colored sport mirrors, another way to spot a fake. This true too?
Saturn Yellow (paint code Q-Q) was a 1970 only color for the GSX series and not available in any other year. The only two colors available in 1970 were the above mentioned Saturn Yellow and Apollo White (paint code 10-10). Apollo White was just a re-name of the normal factory white color called Glacier White. One in the same. There were 678 GSX's produced for the 1970 model year. 1971, 6 colors were available on the GSX's. Apollo White, Stratomist Blue, Lime Mist, Platnium Mist, Bittersweet Mist and Cortez Gold. One GSX was built in Tuxedo Black with Gold stripes. Come to Salem this year and see it live and in person. 124 GSX's were built in 1971. In 1972, all production colors were available for the GSX's. 44 were produced. Sport mirrors were part of the production code WA5 GSX ornimentation package. There is one 1971 GSX, Lime Mist in color, that was built with 1 chrome outside rear view mirror (driver side only). Why? No one knows. GS's only had the chrome outside mirrors, GSX's the body color sport mirrors (except for the above mentioned 1 example).
Yeah - there is even a '70 GSX (documented by Wayne) that came from the factory with power drum brakes ou:
The car show is every Wednesday, so I'll be there tonight with a camera to see if she is back along with the other 5 stage 1's that come regularly. :Brow:
No the GSX wasn't there. Only a '72 GS Stage 1, '70 Electra 225 convertible, a white '66 Riviera, '53 Skylark, '55 Century and a '77-'79 Electra 225 4-door. And no pics of those either. ou:
That's ok, just wondering if you did, sounds like there was a few buicks there, but not the Stage 1 gang.
Brad D35 Body colored sport Mirrors were NOT part of the WA5 71 -72 GSX option they were an option available on any GSX just as they were optional on any GS or plain skylark ( non post skylark) car in 71-72 . Regards,
Look at her cowl tag after the "PNT" it would have to say "Q-Q". I will take a bet it has another paint code on the cowl tag.
Why, of course it's a fake...didn't everybody know that already?  As far as the Sport Mirrors go, I should clarify my post above. In 1970, only GSX's had the Sport Mirrors available. No GS's in 1970 had them. Period. Starting in 1971, you could order Sport Mirrors on any GS (not on Skylarks or other Buick A bodies). This is per my assembly manual with an edition date on that page of 01-21-71. No Skylarks, only GS's (model 3437 and 3467). It has always been my understanding, as well as Duane Heckman's, that the Y41 GSX Orn. package included the Sport Mirrors in all years, 1970 through 1972. Duane has 2 different assembly manuals for both 1971 and 1972 with edition dates early and late in the model year. He's going to check all his manuals and post here later with his findings.
A little humble pie, please... In my above posts, I stated that Sport Mirrors were part of the GSX package in 1971 and 1972. rjohns posted that they were optional in 1971 and 1972 and he is correct. Both Duane and I have only seen one example of a GSX (it was a 1971 model) withOUT sport mirrors, the Lime Mist car at last years BPG Nationals. So to clarify, in 1971 and 1972, sport mirrors were OPTIONAL on both GS's and GSX's. Duane took quite a bit of time researching this and came up with the following: The assembly manual is moot as to the point of the sport mirrors being part of the GSX orn. package but the sales brochure does state you can add things like a front spoiler, hood tach and SPORT MIRRORS to the GSX package. Learn something new everyday, I guess.
