I dismantled my 60 Buick Electra's door (lock mechanism was all gummed up)... I also took the lock barrel out (easy)...
Now that all is cleaned up, I put back the door mechanism and all works fine but I cant figure out how to make the lock barrel work correctly (I can get the barrel in the door, but not catch the lock lever).
The lock barrel goes in but it does not do anything. I notice the barrel lever is supposed to push up and down (lock - unlock) the lock mechanism but I cant figure out how the rounded end of the barrel lock makes the lever go up and down.
I tried turning the lever around 180degreees and either way doe snot work... i'm stumped...
Any one care to enlighted me. i'm clueless ... cant figure this one out !

Did you try to install it with the key in the lock ?
I know that you have to do it like that with the glove box lock, maybe it's the same for the door locks ?

Yes I tried to install it with the key in place...so I could turn it and try to catch the lock lever.
But it does not catch it. I am not sure after turning it in every direction, to understand how it is supposed to move the lever on the door mechanism.

HELP !!!!!! I need some expert insight !!!

Anyone have a picture of the lock / barrel mechanism set right ?

I'll take any kind of advice !!

Just trying to think along here:

Any chance that you put together one lock in a wrong way ?
Are both pawls supposed to point in the same direction on the R and L lock ?

    Here's a photo of a 1960-1970 GM lock set:

No my lock barrels are fine... The key works great in them.
I cant figure out how the interaction between the barrel and the door mechanism operate.
Not sure any locksmith in Paris will figure this out either.
I'm an engineer by trade so I shouldnt be totally clueless but something is wrong or maybe I am blind and missing something.
Here are the locks held in place in the door (I tried setting up the prong/pawel on the end of the barrel differently in both pictures. Not sure which way they goso i tried both.). But they dont action the lever from the door mechanism correctly.
What did I do wrong ?

Did you remove both locks ?
If not, check the other door.

You should order a 1960 Fisher Body manual, the 1960 Buick Chassis manual does not say anything about the door locks.

Yes unfortunately i removed both locks and pawels (and forgot to take picures prior to dismantling).
i have the Buick manuals and barely nothing is mentioned and no diagrams...... What is the fisher manual. Never heard about it.
aaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrgggggggg...... This should seem so simple !

I just found out that there is no "Fisher" in the name of the model year 1960 Body Service manual: Click here :Comp:

Or you could contact Greg Cockerill, he's the owner of the1960buick.com :Comp:

There is an e-mail button at the bottom of his front page :TU:

I'll pull a door panel and take a look at that system on the '60 parts car tomorrow and compare.

Steve, you are a star ..... merci buckets !!!!!
Here is the only mention of the lock in the 1960 Body Service manual. It mentions the curved edge of the pawl being towards the door hinge. I tried that (if I understood which side that really meant) but not conclusive.

The only thing that I can add is the flat lever (locking mechanism on the door) was slightly bent and I straightened it on one side. I may have to rebend it if I can figure out how the pawl is supposed to be oriented.

Here's some pics of the lock in the front passenger door of the '60 Invicta. It's a 4-door sedan if it matters. I checked to see if the lock worked as it should with the key and it did. Hope this helps.

I guess I should have looked at your pics first. The systems are totally different 4 door sedan vs Convertible.. Go figure ??..... I don't know what to tell you now .....

    Thanks Steve...
The systems are different. There is no linkage. I need to spend a little time trying to figure it out again... If not I have no lock and I do the finger in the hole trick to lock the car !
No one is going to steal my electra in paris so I'm in no hurry to get it figured out. Would like to do it one day soon, if anyone else has a convertible and can take a picture !
Would love to see a full picture of your buick though :)
