1957 was one of my favorite years until I discovered that my 264 1955 Special would do a quarter mile faster then a supposedly 300 hp '57. I still love the '57 styling, but if I had one, I would have to put a 401 into it. A 19+ second Quarter for a supposedly 300 hp car is ridiculous. (There were posts about this recently).

Well consider that in 1957 the transmission did not contribute due to the linkage change to the secondaries only and that the car was heavier for that year as well. The 1956 tests had the advantage of having a dynaflow and driver being able to use low gear to start and blast you with all that low end torque to get you out of the hole. In 1957 the dynaflow would have to rely on the down kick of the mighty carters. The final gear ratios were up notched and taller as well.

All this did mean however for 57 that when passing a car on a hill these changes would be a blessing and advantage over the previous versions prior to 1957 where all the work could be effectively applied within the 364's rpm/torque band of useable power.

All true, but the '55 still had 100 fewer cubic inches. Being standard shift, it also had the low-compression 264.
