My right brake light does not work, but the bulbs work. when the headlights are on both running lights work, the blinker also works. the fuse is good. how is this possible? it is a 1966 skylark.
I'm not sure how your year works - but are you sure each bulb does double-duty? Some cars have separate bulbs for some functions. Others have a bulb with two filaments. If one bulb does all things (brake, parking, and blinking) I'd think that if it blinks it should show brakes as well. Maybe you have a bad connection between the brake-pedal switch and that bulb. I'd check the wiring to the socket on that side. Someone with specific knowledge of the '66 will probably give you a much better idea.
if your car uses the same rear bulb for a blinker as it does for a brake light, here is some of what happens when you use your turn signal.... while you push your brake pedal, the brake light switch sends the voltage up the steering column and through the turnsignal switch. if you are NOT using a turn signal, contacts within the turn signal switch allow the voltage to split off into the right and left turn/brake light wires(that run to the right and left brake/turn filiments in the bulbs in the rear of the car). BUT!.... if you have your right blinker ON, the turn signal switch removes the right turn/brake wire from that brake circuit and reconnects it to the "blinker" circuit (the blinker circuit has a flasher installed inline to make the chosen bulb flash) making the chosen bulb flash. if this is your system, and things happen the way you say ... i think you have a problem with your turn signal switch "reconnecting" the right turn/brake wire after the turn signal is "cancelled"(a term meaning that the switch is returned to the center position). wadda ya think?
does anyone know where i could get a turn signal switch for a 66 skylark, or possibly have a spare? also how does one put it in? i assumed remove the steering wheel but i am not exactly sure how to do that either. thanks
