Brake Booster: Too leaky!

In another thread I mentioned I'm either going to buy a repro booster or replate my original. I have silicon brake fluid in use now, but it seeps out where the master cylinder meets the brake booster.

From looking at other cars, this is not an uncommon problem. Is there any particular method of installing these parts that eliminates this problem?

If I buy and install a new booster, I sure don't want to go through all this leaky leaky business. Gotta be a better way.

    Thanks for the help.

Mine started leaking there too... right before it went out at the dragstrip!

That's the seal going bad. Once it's gone the cylinder needs replaced. Mine was nice enough to make my brake light go on. I was able to stop it from 100 mph, using the dragster return lane. I also drove it about 15 miles home too.

Is there any key to keeping it from leaking in the first place, or is this just something that will happen from time to time? How often should the cylinder crap out?

    Thanks for the look.

Master cylinder is bad. Replace it and you will more than likely never have to touch it again. Ed K

  5. I'm going to have to chime in and second the bad master cylinder theory. I had the leak happen on my LeSabre, and after taking things apart, it's the seals/bore in the master cylinder. With your new booster put on a new Master Cylinder, and you won't have to deal with it for another 40 years.

Just some more info! Do NOT use a reblt master cylinder.
    Nothing but trouble with them!

Buy a new master cylinder. You can get them from Raybestos or TRW. Cost is about $45. I just bought 2 at AutoZone, price is $44 each.

    Good Luck!

Thanks fellas. I love this site. By the way, either of you have any thoughts on whether I should give the parts place booster a shot or not? I promise not to blame either of you if its garbage, I swear!

Once again, thanks so much for the consideration of the thread.

Well, if the car is not a show car or concourse car, I would not spend the money on one, $199. I did a conversion on a 72 Skylark from drum to discs and the new master w/reblt p.booster was $130. I used gold paint with a couple coats of clear. Up to you !
