It is it necessary to box the frame on a Skylark with under 500 HP? Will poly body mounts stiffen it enough?
I have never raced an "A" body car but have raced a "G" body car (almost same frame) and when I sold the car it had about 5000 passes down the track with no problems except that the right rear lower conrol arm bracket ripped off the frame and the rearend went side ways some. My present "G" body car has the brackets treated to more weld by a friend so I don't have the same problem again. I never changed out the body mounts for the poly ones but did use them in the rearend control arms.
You may want to reinforce the control arm mounts if you are launching it hard, but I would think the frame would be fine. There are serious racing folks in here who will know for sure.
It is my friends 1965 Skylark. I will suggest that his POST car is probably strong enough. He has already agreed to install poly body mounts and rear control arm braces for the rear crossmember/control arm support. We are hoping this is good enough.
i think the boxed frames arent for drag racing as much as it is for driving them hard with that power i could be wrong but i see many unboxed cars pulling 12s
My 11 second race car had a unboxed frame was a race car for many years and is still a race car. Not sure if the new owner did anything except the rear half. I doesn't look to hard to do if your building the car. Chevelle kit thats pre cut is available I bet
