I bought a old school amplifier that has a great reputation over the west coast. It's a Zapco AG 650 and is a 6 channel amplifier with outstanding sound qualitiy and under rated power at 50w X 6 at 4 ohms. I'll bet none of you audiophiles herd of this one! :Brow: AL.

Used them for a couple years

about 10 years ago in Japan. We got the first lot off the assembly line. They were nice amps, but too big for most of the installs I did. Great heat transfer.

:spank: These Zapco amplifiers were made here in the USA and never over seas :spank: . The Red White and Blue on the top cover lets the rice lovers know that we in America can and do build performance driven amplifiers :TU: , AL.

    Maybe that came out wrong-

We were THE performance install shop in Japan. We had the first lot off the assembly line delivered (shipped to us) for testing...sorry for the confusion. We also did a lot of real world testing for PPI and Orion.

Okay! You are a audiophile! :beer Thanks for the follow up! :TU: Well it is pretty cool that we make a first class product and is still built here in the U.S. and imported to Japan is really cool! I was looking for a amplifier with super SQ and a proven tract record. I looked into Soundstream (now own over seas) and there quality has dropped compared to the old Referance Series. I heard so much positive feedback on Zapco so I bought one and it came from a town near where it was built in CA. I'll post pictures of the install when its finished, AL.

look to ads & diamond audio for sq

I prefer diamond seperates as well, with alumapro subs coupled with rane/rockford/orion processing (old school stuff). For the price you cannot beat an all diamond audio system though. good luck. the zapco will serve well for a long time.

Man do I miss my old Orion "red top" 225(?) HCCA. Still got my Sound stream d-200 from the late '80's though :) . The Zapco's cool too... but big... :bglasses:

Cool looking amp.. Exactly how BIG is that thing, it looks huge.

I've never really liked the "All in one" amps for my use... I like to keep the amps seperated.

I had 4 linear Power amps in my SQ comp car... Wireing is much more difficult because you have more of it, but it's easier to "upgrade" one componet if you feel the need to go bigger.

Linear Power was allways my favorite personally... Like Hi-phonics too. Soundstream and presion power were allways decent, but couldn't hold a candle to my LP's as far as SQ.

I'm not about the SPL's anymore... but all about the SQ. I still like it loud though.

I'm building my collection back up again.. got too small LP amps (652IQ's) for my mids & High's... Waiting on a larger one to come up for my subs. Until then, the kenwood I have does OK.

Glad to see you finally got what you were looking for :TU: . Man, it seemed like you were searching for ever...lol.

My.. you sure got a purdy amp

you said you got that new?? current production run? I was under the impression that all the new China and Jap crap was putting the US makers under (like with Linear). 1000 watt china amp for $100 (never mind the 2% THD... :af: ) All the younger kids just starting in the scene were/are being suckered into the flashy, ultra distorted, what's bridging, newer amps. I heard that was putting alot of pressure on the High end manufacturers.

So if they're currently in buisness, I might just have to change my brand loyalty :Brow:

How's the crossover?? Notice any frequency drop between channels? Any spikes? I've seen alot of "built in" crossovers that seemed to "Like" some frequencies better than others, and didn't mix the "Border line" frequencies well. Some of that was speaker alignment(mids and highs need to be focused for best results), but most of it was the crossover.

Nothing like turning on the stereo and noticing a 400 rpm drop..lol. :pp

    Zapco 650

I did the install and well here is a e-mail I sent MadCat455....The amp that was in played fine so I'm pretty sure the new amp has a problem. I'm going to call Zapco Monday and see what they offer as far as a flat repair fee and get in touch with the guy I bought it from and see what he wants to do. I bought it off Ebay and the guy has 100% feed back until now and that will change if he does nothing to straighten out this problem. I'm very good with the installs its just I wanted a second option on the amp setting but I'm more and more thinking the problem is the amp because I'm running high end cables and wires and the old one didn't have any issues, AL.

As you all know I have no problem posting my mistakes and here is one.... the Monster brand speaker cable is double insulated and once you strip off the heavy cover there is a clear cover still on the single wires, well I found out I didn't clean that off and that's why I had channels that didn't work. My mistake!!!!! No damage done! Just my pride, I'm not perfect!!! The only other thing that concerns me is the sub channel, draws a lot of power and not very loud and thinking I need to bridge the DVC sub to 5&6 channel. AL.

    My Mistake

There is nothing wrong with the amplifier just the installer :spank: . Well I had to run longer speaker line ti the new amplifier and have learned the Monster High end cable are double insulated and miss seeing the inside clear insulation. Removed that and then problem fixed! And as far as the sub channel sounding weak and drawing large amounts of power that was because I needed to bridge the 5&6 on the DVC sub because the running sub separate drew to much impedance and after I bridged 5&6 of the sub coils that fixed that problem. I have no problem admitting my "Bo-Bo"s, AL.

I like that amplifier, the size doesn't bother me, always have enough room in the electra...looks like you had just enough space to mount it. Glad everything worked out.

    Zapco 650

I asked a lot of questions and have learned a lot on this one. I sold the other one for what I paid for it to someone thats using it as a multimedia set up. I kept hearing good feedback on Zapco and thought that would be the one to get but these are hard to come by and demand a good price if you can find one. I can say this amplifier has a incredable lay out and is build long for a reason. Are the inside parts are spread a part between interior amplifiers and layed out so the air from the cooling fan pulls air ove the intire amplifier and this ampilfier also has out side heat sink! This amp never runs hot! I think this was a good move and happy to say this is a product of the U.S.A. :TU: . I did some fine tuning today in the garage and the sound pressure knocked a puzzle off the sheilf  , AL.

Glad you managed to fix it Al!! If I could remember well enough right now I could tell you some weird/dumb stuff I did/saw. Sure would like to find me an old HCCA series from Orion or An Autotek (remember those, used to be known as the"punch killer"
