Can anybody recommend a Big Fat DOT drag tire?

Thinking of buying some new rubber for the rear of my 70...currently 255/60/15's,
The car sees few miles and I would like to buy something that will give me the best (60') straight line traction and be DOT legal. The sheet metal is stock and it's gonna stay that way....

    I already have 15 x 8 wheels and am thinking maybe... Hoosier QuickTimes 295/50D15 on the 8's or...maybe 325/50D15 on 10's.

Probably need to pay close attention to the backspacing. 4-3/4 or maybe 5, Thanks in advance!

    Thanks Steve for the advice...

First and foremost I want to be able to hook the car and since I live less than 5mi. from the local "sandbox" I don't want to deal with changing tires @ the track...and since I have several other "jewels" to use for highway miles, most of my street miles will be just squirreling around, local cars shows and cruse action, etc.

I use to do all my cruising on 29.5 x 9.0 M&H Racemasters...never left the shop without them...
But those were different times...now I'm "thinking" DOT tires in case I get caught out in the rain and have to get home. Thanks again I'll take a closer look in to those "Jap tires " too.<grin>

glen- i use bfg drag radials in the 315x60x15 size on 10 inch wheels but they did nt fit without rolling up the outer wheel lip and they occasionally rub inside in steep curbed driveways approaches when the housing shifts a little. the biggest you can fit in stocker wheelwells, based on my experience would be the 295-60x15 i believe. i have had 60 ft times of 1.78-1.80 with a low 13 second car/3.90 gear ratio. this size does look HUGE under the car and most people assume the car is tubbed and are shocked when they look under and see it isnt. the wheels are weld pro stars, 15x10 with 5.5 inch backspacing. the bfg drags bulge the sidewalls quite a bit, so the wider the wheel, the better fit inside the wheelhouse and the better contact patch you'll get. also, my set, while worn out now, have traveled 7000 street miles and over 100 passes at the track. hope this helps

I run 28x11.5x15 E.T. streets they are ok in the rain as long as your not going over 40-50 mph then they tend to get a little loss ( and this is in a good rain storm) other wise i drive my car about 2500 miles a year and go to the track 3-4 times a year and im going on my third year with mine. Short burnouts 1st till smoke into second a few seconds and ride it to the line. I get 1.68 60 ft with them and the best I ever had with slicks is 1.66 60 ft. I run them between 10 -13 psi at the track and 20 on the street with no problems crusing at 60 -65 mph. If I had an 8" wide rim I could probably run a12.5 but im not positive. I did screw mine to the rims but Im not sure if it was needed, just wanted to be safe.

I have the BFG 295-65-15 Drag Radials, and I am very happy with the all around hook.

Hi, I was wondering what car you have those 295's on, and if it's a 70 GS, what size wheel with what backspacing are they on? I'm running the 275's right now, but would like to fit a bigger set of meats in the fenderwells. I just don't want to have to cut anything up or roll the fender lips. Thanks. Phil Sedlon

My rear wheels are stock GS repro wheels from Wheel Vintiques, 15x8, 4.75 backspace. Fit perfect.

I'm running the same rear wheels. But there is only about 3/4" of an inch from the wheelwell lip now. I don't think the wider tires would work on my car. There does appear to be plenty of room on the inner area. I hate to buy them and have them not fit and end up selling them on ebay for half of what I paid. I hate these dilemas..........

how do you guys get away with running such a big BS? at stock 3.75" with a fair amount of sidewall poking out, i'm very close to the exhaust and some suspension components, which is why i'm planning on using the same BS on some new 15x8's...they should fill out the outer well nicely, the only place where i might have a problem is on the front...gotta make sure they won't rub during turns.
