I believe they were acorn nut not the type typically seen. I did not know anyone other than CARS sells them CARS are made out of Stainless Steel. The originals were capped like a tooth.

I just bought a set from O'Reilly's yesterday for $30....since I needed them for my chrome wheels also. The regular nuts just don't do those wheels justice:laugh:

You can still buy replacement lug nuts through GM (# 12387947), although they are not real cheap and are a little different appearance and design.
They have a stainless cap very similar looking to the original, but the beveled area where they contact the hole in the wheel is quite a bit larger.
It seems like it would be a much better design than the original that way, since it doesn't "dig" into the lug hole gouging and distorting it.
That's what I'm going to use when I install my nos 15x7 rallye wheels just for that reason.

If you are trying to be correct then you will have to go with the reproductions, all the original GM ones that are still available do not have the correct apearance.

The correct "tall cap" rally wheel lugnut reproductions were reproduced 1st some years ago by Ted Williams Chevrolet Parts & distributed through vendors in their downline. This lugnut was reproduced for '69-70 Chevrolet SS1 wheels (YA's & AO's) & pre '73 Chevy rally wheels, & is as correct as one can get.

Having bought, years ago, the incorrect machined from hex bar stock repro's (more j...k from YearOne), & a decent sized box full of new '73-81 syle "short cap" lugnuts in GM dealership cleanouts, had no use for either on our factory rally equipped cars & have sold the lesser lugnuts off.

Searching today, spend the money once, & spend it right.

We too have some originals and they look just like the ones you posted. If you look in the first pic it shows the thin chrome cap over a hard under piece.

Thanks Dana! It sure was hard getting the right angle with the camera. :moonu:

    Jim-

Yes, I'm pretty sure it's a regular old lug nut under the thin cap. I think I have a whole set, maybe one or two short. I did trade 'em out for some I thought were snazzier back in the day, but the originals were in the trunk when I got the car out of the barn.

After seeing the correct originals on here and looking again at the new GM replacements, there's alot of difference in the appearance between the two. The only similarity is they both have a stainless cap.
