My new Dell came with Sonic which I heard is not the best.

What software is out there (freeware???) that will work well with DVD +/- RW (dual layer capability) and CD-RW devices?

I've heard of Nero (which isn't free) for burning DVDs, but does Nero also handle CD-RWs?

    TIA :beer

    Marco,
I have tried several and Nero is the easiest and most reliable for me. I'm sure others will attest to other brands. I believe that Windows Media Player has a built in burner??? :Do No:

Nero will burn using CD-RWs. Do an ebay search under Nero...lot cheaper than any store.

Having said that...I prefer Roxio over Nero mysef.

Through several versions of Roxio I had nothing but problems. A nightmare!

But NERO is the one I recommend and stand behind.

Just be sure to uninstall Sonic before installing NERO. My opinion is that if you won't be using software, then uninstall it. Better safe than sorry!

Nero for burning. For DVD creation, (suppose you want to archive your video cam collection) use Sonic's DVD It. It works well for me.

I have found out that the idea of CD burning is an Urban Myth. Don't even try as it can't be done. I've tried several different types of CD burners and found none of them work! All the King's men and all the King's horses have attempted to get my "So Called " CD burning programs to work and unfortunately all have failed.
" SAVE YOUR MONEY !!!".......It doesn't work!............( Can you tell my frustration with CD burners?......   )

    Al,
You need a CD burner for the software to work...it won't work with a CD player!   :Comp: (Sorry, it's late Friday afternoon and I'm still at work.)

Oh, I've bought the CD burner, returned it for another when no one could get it to work, bought a different one, switched burner programs, etc,etc,...
After going through an entire box of blank CDs, I finally threw in the towel and figured the entire idea of CD burning was ficticious. By the way, Nero was one program we tried..... :Do No:

I just use Media player for CD's....

Dell put that sonic crap on my puter too... Get rid of it and install DVD shrink.
It works with Nero, but there are no copyright problems.

I have nero 6 and couldn't burn any movie in my collection. But DVD shrink hasn't encountered anything it couldn't copy. Plus, it'll let you get rid of all the spanish, french, etc. language support to save on space.

Oh yeah, Its FREEWARE :TU: :TU:

I have the program saved as a download on my puter, I can send it to you if you want.

BTW... if you download the trial version of Nero 6 (14 day trial)... you can use it. To keep it longer just adjust the date on your puter to within that trial period and Nero won't know the difference...lol. DVD shrink will still use it even without changing the date (overides it somehow), but only burns at 2x.... change the date and I got 8X. (that's all my burner will support)

    did you try this:

when inserting the blank disk... do so standing on your head, while rubbing your tummy with one hand, insert the CD with your toung while humming any brittnay spears song.

That should do the trick. Be sure to have someone tape it so we have proof it worked for you :Brow:

Seriously though, Nero is kind of difficult to get at first. I find it easier to use Media Player,

Just insert your music disc.... Hit Copy. Once its done, go to burn... make sure all of the songs appear in on the left & hit burn (or copy). Should work fine.

You can get creative and copy all your music onto a file on your puter, then just drag & drop what songs you want on the new CD onto the left column of Media Player.

The new DVDdecrypter does dual-layer DVDs, also lets you do the bitsetting to change book types. Rips any DVDs that have copy protection (used for backing up your own legit originals). I use burnatonce for CD burning. Best of all, both are free. Get DVDshrink for DVD mastering (shrinking a big movie). DVDidentifier and DVDinfopro will do media analysis. If you have a Liteon burner, get Kprobe to check the quality of your burn. All these are free too.

i use sonys old CDExtreme, adaptec, and golden hawk software on my sony burner (its only a CRX160-01 12x burner) i have burned well in exess of 1000 music and data cds with about 50 buffer underruns...

when burning karaoke discs, i use the goldenhawk software and have burned about 600 discs with about 30 failures....

my first burner was a sony 4x with Prassi (CDRight) software and i burned about 400 cds with it and NEVER had a single bad disc..... it rocked. ...then i sold it and upped to the 12x and have been with it since.

i aint messed with any DVD mastering yet ... i have seen how much it has aged my best friend.

Here's a good tip I learned in school:

Enable DMA on your CD drives if you're copying a CD.

On Windoze I prefer Nero over Adaptec (now Roxio). Either should get the job done, but I consider Nero as better, and more configurable.

Lately I've used K3B on linux, and its wonderful.

The built-in burning on XP is pretty bad. I'm not sure, but I think it only does packet-writing (someone correct me if I'm wrong).

As for not being able to get something to burn - there could be many reasons for this that are unrelated to the burner or burning software. I'm assuming it tried, but the discs all failed and are now coasters.

For Dvd's I use Dvddecrypter I am pretty sure its freeware. I used nero several times to burn Dvd's and it always failed me. Yet for Cd's I use nero and its fine. Also for Cd's try Fireburner.

Depending on how old the computer is and the system being used, that be be the problem with burning discs.Perhaps the burner is not compatible with the system. A new driver would have to be found to accept the burner. After that,it's as easy as 1 2 3. I use Nero to copy and Media Player for ropping. I've got over 4000 songs on the hard drive on 31Gigs of space. Not all of the music I "own".

Good point...there is a good chance the CD ROM may be too "slow" for the burner. If so the info being read from the original CD is not being sent quick enough to the burner, resulting in errors.

I just finished copying 51 Data CDs (15000 mp3s) and only had one CD error and that was due to a corrupted mp3 file which could not be copied.

I would highly suggest DVDShrink for movies that will not fit on 1 DVD, which most are. It is pretty easy to use and works great. In addition, DVDShrink works seamlessly with Nero. A very good combination.

Nero is not that difficult to use the basics. But I am sure it can do a lot more than I ever desire. There is an express side of the program that will allow you to click on basic functions like "copy a disk", "create a data disk", "create a video disk", "create an audio disk" etc..... It will not get much easier than that anywhere.
