    Hi folks,

Trying to get my '70 GS 455 clone running after a decade. Wanted to replace the original brittle wires. Just called M&H wiring since I've heard a lot of good things about them.

They said it would take 4 months to build. I suppose I can use what I have and redo it in 4 months, but is there another company of comparable quality that might be able to supply one faster, or should I just wait?

    Thanks!

I have used a few painless kits and they worked well. How much is the harness that you are looking at?

Think they wanted $175 plus another $24 (and two more weeks) to make the HEI conversion. Can't believe they need two weeks to do that!

Im planning on doing my complete harness with a painless one. Maybe more than you're wanting to spend though if you're on a budget. Another company to check out is American autowire.
    Good luck.

When I ordered from M&H it was at my door in a couple weeks.
I ordered it factory, but also ordered the kit for internally regulated alternator.
I wanted the stock distributor wiring as I used a stock style distributor with a Crane XRi kit and the Crane kit uses the resistance wire in the harness, not 12v
If you're planning to use the GS air cleaner, it does not fit well with the big cap HEI units. Another reason to go stock style.

Autozone rebuilt distributor is about $40
    Crane kit is $70
    Install yourself... its pretty easy.

I used Rebel Wire. It was well put together. And marked well. They had great customer service. It isn't Buick exclusive but fair priced and a quick turn around.

I bought one from american autowire. They made a few tweaks for me and I had it in hand in 2 weeks. Looks like a nice piece too.

American Autowire...no question about it. Fast and nice harnesses. Lectric Limited resells American Autowire harnesses...at least for Buick GS + Skylark. They do nice work also, but right now, I think they only manufacture Corvette harnesses in house. Actually...I thought M + H was reselling mostly American Autowire now, too.

I have used Both, M&H & American Autowire. Been satisfied with Both, & after conversations with both companies, can recommend them.
M&H did the 1 for my 70 Convertible. Ordered through Poston, & drop shipped to me. M&H seems to do runs for the larger resellers (OPGI & similar) but will work in the single orders when doing the larger runs.
American took my order for my 68, and it was here W/I 1 week. Both do Very Good work & use the Factory Diagrams Color etc. for a restoration or Factory replacement.
    Both are "Plug & Play".
Painless does primarily a General System. Good Quality for a Modified car, but Not as a restoration. I will probably be using their set ups for the Albatross I am building.
I have heard Good comments about "Lectric" as well, on cars that were being modified with Electronic Ignition, using the later distributors in earlier cars, like putting a later 455 in a 68 GS.

If you are looking for a factory harness then I can easily recommend American Autowire. I just ordered one for my 70 GS on Tuesday and it was at my door yesterday. Everything is there, just need to put it in now.

    M&H for me.

Their phone support is the best.

    Thanks folks,

American Autowire it is. I will call them Monday.

Yes, I agree with Paul that M&H has great customer service, as the rep spent 20 minutes on the phone with me and was very kind..

But they couldn't give me a harness for 3.5 months--4 months if I wanted it converted to HEI, which I did.

Sounds like American can have it pretty quick..

    Thanks, again!

    Hi folks,

I called American Wire today to order the under-hood harness--$400.00. Seemed a bit steep??

I was told that this comprises actually two different harnesses--one for the headlights, side lights, turn signals, alternator, and voltage regulator. The other one is for the starter, coil, sending units, etc.

When I first called M&H they quoted me about $185.00 and said (or implied) that it was just one harness. Guess I will call them back again right now. Any thoughts?

    Thanks!

There are 2 harnesses under the hood...an engine harness + a lighting harness. I've never heard of buying then together. You buy 1, the other, or both. I'm pretty sure M&H quoted you for just one of the 2 harnesses, not both. The pricing at both places is very competitive. FYI...the guy who was COO or CEO of M&H defected to AAW about 8-9 years ago.

Yeah I bought just the engine harness. Then a set of correct battery cables and sent AAW my attic block for them to run the positive cable though during assembly. They are nice

Somewhere there is an info mismatch. The engine harness I got from AAW last week was $176. This was with no mods, just a factory harness. The front lighting harness is $181 and a completely separate item.

    Scott,

Yes, I was thinking there was an info "issue," but the guy said the front lighting harness also contains the wires for the alternator
and voltage regulator. Is this the case with the harness you received?

Those prices sound pretty to me. I couldn't find anything factory for my 62 special so im making my own. I'm fortunate a friend has a harness co. but does modern stuff (tesla) I have access to wire but not vintage connectors. My car has a separate harness for tail lights, tail light to dash, dash complete including engine and lights, and wipers/ heater. I'm up grading the gauge size and adding runs for elec fuel pump, headlight relays, 3 wire alt. Most of it is pretty straight foreward but serious head scratching going on when behind the dash. Right now i'm stuck trying to find the 1.85 ohm resistance wire going to coil. Any body out there run across this item? Mine's long but i've seen some short sections in auto parts stores. Think they would work?
    Thanks, Rick
