Best cam for dual-quad, iron head, pump gas?

    Hello all!

I don't know much about multi-carb setups and I'm just turning some ideas over in my head. Keeping in mind that this would be for a pump gas street car, here's a few questions:

    - With that dual-quad and non-stage heads, would it be better to go with something like 450CFM units or would 600's be better?

    - Since the dual-quads presumably like high flow, would changing the rocker ratio help out the airflow on those stock heads?

    - What would be the best cam to go with a dual-quad setup and stock, non-stage heads?

    - Would that cam selection change if you kept the dual-quad and moved to iron stage 1 heads?

    Thanks for the info!

450s would still be way over kill on a stock iron head moter using a cam that would run good on pump gas. i would say a 118 cam even on untouched stage 1 heads. rocker ratio wont be a factor till you start to do some porting, cam duration is most important, then enough lift to keep air volcitys up. to much lift and not enough flow in your heads will make less power. the key is to match the cam to your head flow numbers and your commpression ratio, then things like gears and stall come in to play. need more info on your set up

No setup info, really, just trying to figure what a good setup might be. Maybe I didn't ask the right questions.

I get the impression from your comment that it would be difficult to get a dual-quad setup to run with pump gas on a 455 with stock iron heads, regardless of the cam. Did I read that right, or is it just that I would have to find something smaller than 450's to make it work?

    Thanks again for the info.

Hi Freed, I would suggest checking out the thread titled "Dual 4 455" in the Mixing Shop part of the board. Ask one of these guys, maybe Joeslark can give you some info. He is running 600's non-progressive. I'm putting an old pair of Holley 585's on mine,KB 113 cam,M/T headers,9.5 comp.,Holeshot 2000 converter. Don't have gears yet. Oh ya and rebuilt non stage 70 heads. Let me know what you find, I'm also interested . Tom

No, it would run just fine, just way more carb and intake for a iron head pump gas moter.

I run dual 600's on a 425 using an old Alum. Edel intake with factory heads. With no other change other than a Petronix, I noticed a difference in the seat of my pants. It runs much better on top end now and really gets attention at cruise ins.
