I think one of my axle bearings is starting to go out. I am getting a howl during deceleration only. When accelerating just the sound of Buick. When slowing down I get what I am pretty sure is a bearing. The rear end is a posi traction one. Are there any special tricks to pull an axle? Or to make sure it is the axle bearing?

    Thanks

No tricks to remove an axle. Just jack up one side at a time and then remove the 4 nuts holding the retaining plate. Use an inertia/slap hammer to pull the axle out. Inspect bearing for damage/galling/shavings. Repeat for other side. How many miles on the car and/or rear?

I'm not real sure how many miles are on the axle. It is a positraction swap so it's not the original. I wasn't sure if there was anything special about posi rearends that would make the removal different from standard rearends.

    Thanks for the your input.

My guess is pinion brgs. Probably the larger "head" bearing. Failing axle brgs. are prone to make noise on accel or decel. Pinion seal leaking? Gear lube full?
