I'd like to get this thread restarted. I just had my GS shipped to me (the seller was storing it for me until the weather broke). This week I was under the car changing the oil, when I looked over towards the right side of the car, and saw that some knucklehead, sometime during the life of the car, replaced the positive battery cable with one that was too long. How long was it you ask? Long enough that the cable was routed down against the frame, hard into and along the idler arm  , before it made it's way over towards the routing sleeve on the engine. A dead short to the battery just waiting to happen! :af:
How long should the positive battery cable be, so I may replace the cable with one of the correct length? Thanks for your help.

actually just measure the distance from the battery post to the starter using the routing that is displayed in the shop manual. if u are intending to have cables made up, then use a piece of cotton rope and masking take & follow the route to obtain the length.
actually, i bought both battery cables (side mounting) based on the order book prescribed length & they are okay.

I did what Gerry suggested and it worked out nice (imo). Same for Negative. And I think mine was 4 gauge? Not sure though, as I just took a section from the wire into my local battery/electric place and they told me what I needed.

Hi, Just replaced the + cable in my 70GS BB. Used a 45 " cable. It gives a little slack. JOE  :) :)

Thanks for the help everyone. I just cannot believe the hacks that worked on this car before I got it. I guess I better get to work before this thing burns down on me.
