I removed the quadrajet on my 67 GS yesterday to install a different quadrajet that had had been rebuilt by Everyday Performance. When I took my original carb off the manifold I found that someone had put a composition gasket against the intake manifold, followed by the stainless shim, and then ANOTHER composition gasket between the shim and the carburetor base. Does anyone know a legit reason for doing this? I thought it was supposed to be carb, shim, composition gasket, manifold, in that order. Why the extra composition gasket? Bone-headed previous owner with more gaskets than they knew what to do with?
Could be the 2nd. gasket was used because the base plate is warped??? I usually use a piece of 400 grit on a known flat surface & evenly rub the base across to check for "Flatness". Tom T.
I use a smiley-channel gasket between the steel shim and the manifold, then the 1/4" base gasket between the shim and carb. Putting the steel shim against the intake manifold without the gasket wasn't sealing the exhaust channel well enough for me, so I used the gasket and it seals it off just fine.
