Hey guys, with any luck I will be trying to obtain a barn find GSX. Just found out about the car several days ago. My friend think its a 70 or 71. Is there anything in the VIN that denotes a real GSX, or what should i look for. My friend says its a 455 car, dont know if its a stage 1 or not. Thanks for any help. Steve
Big difference between verifying a 1970 or a 1971. You'll want documentation for a 1971. And as far as I know, there's nothing in the VIN that will designate a GSX. If it's a 1970 Saturn Yellow car, QQ will be stamped on the cowl tag. 10-10 if it's an Apollo White car but that code could also be for an all white Skylark. Then you must move on from there for the other tell tale signs. Post pictures of the car, the cowl tag, block stamp, transmission tag and there are some on the forum much more experienced than me who can guide you.
In 70, no. The VIn will simpley denote it as a GS-455. The first 5 will be 44637. All will be flint cars- H as the assembly plant. White cars will have a 10-10 paint code. The white paint code is NOT unique. But the yellow cars will have a Q-Q paint code which IS unique to a 70 GSX. They were Built between March and May so the production date should fall within that time frame. 71's are a very different animal. Your looking for a super low body number and and an H in the VIN
Hey thanks, all good info, i appreciate it. I have only just found out about this car, gonna try to get with the owners brother tomorrow, to get to the owner. And again im only going off what my friend has told me, i guess it could be a 72 as well. keepin my fingers crossed.
Sorry for the delay, I did see the car, no pics yet. Sorry. I hope to go back. Its been in storage for a long time, totally covered in dust. I could barely open the drivers door, it needs interior. Let me back up, it was the guys brother that showed it to me. He says his brother wont sell, Apparently the brother is an older biker might possibly have some issues. I wont say what i heard because i dont know the guy, cant always believe what you hear. He lives far away from here. It is a real GS 455, with later add on GSX stripes and spoilers. It appears the paint under the dust is good. I think the tires were H-60/15's Bias ply tires...OLD! He did give me his brothers phone number, but said he wont answer, he was right, no answer yet. Im gonna go back out there soon to see if thers another way to get to him.
Yup probably will continue to turn to dust until the brother moves on to the next life. Such a shame.
Ok the latest, the owner did call fairly recently, ok 6 months ago. It is a real 1970 GS 455, but I still dont know if its a Stage 1 or not. As i said before it will need upholstry and possibly a dash pad and carpet. The paint is great, black with GSX stripes and spoilers. No idea how long its been sitting, but he said it ran good when stored. He said he wants $10,000 and is firm. I think thats probably a good price. I cant stop thinking about it. Is it worth it?
You being the only guy that has seen it, you tell us......But..... If it's a nice car that only needs interior that's a steal.
