How do you identify how large in inches a band saw is? Got a 50+ yr. old band saw in the garage. Thanks in advance. :TU:

Beleive the general rule for measuring size is throat size, or clearance size.
Other words, how big a piece of wood can you get by the saw?

if you have the old blade, just measure the o.d.. if you don't, just take a tape measure or string and go around the pulleys.
the width of the blade is just a little wide than the guides are. if you have the blade welder on the machine and it works, your in luck. otherwise you will have to mig weld it and stress relieve with a propane torch.
rpm and blade pitch os determine by the material you are cutting. more teeth the finer the cut. rpm you probably will need most of the time is around 100.

    Throat depth

Throat depth is how they measure the size of a band saw, You measure from the inside of the blade to the inside of the throat and Measuring the blade length is done by measuring the wheels from center to center and then divide the wheels in half and add both halfs to your measurement from center to center plus a 1/16 this will give some adjustment on the blade
Just like everyone above said cept the 1/16th. The othe way to measure the blade is if it is shot just cut it and measure its lenght. They make blades that are already made to length and welded. Just get one that is close to your measurement. If you have problem finding one let me know I can help you.
