Axles - 1970 Skylark Custom

So I have searched the forums for days and cannot find a clear answer... Does anybody make replacement axle shafts for this rear? I am quite sure this is an 8.2 however I have not cracked open the case to count the spline..

That being said If I can find a 68-70 A-body Axle shaft, will it fit?? Does it depend on the spline?

My ride went sideways into a curb and bent the shaft slightly.... My passenger side tire will be greatly appreciative of any help in this situation..

 

I have a couple parts cars if you dont go new.

I think a 70 is just that a 70. I have 4 70 parts cars so it should be easy to get out.

 

You need a 28 spline with a internally oiled bearing and the seal on the shaft . If it is truely a 1970...I would pull it before buying for sure. 40 years someone might have swapped rears ....Best to be safe and not pay extra for shipping back and forth...lol. I have the shafts here too if needed and can even install new bearing and seal also so you will not have to think about it for a good long time. Take care, Jim

 

Yep thats what I thought too. This car I was pulling out from has had nice parts all along so far I will check it out tomorrow

Im in Adairsville Ga. Seems like the middle of nowhere when trying to get anything shipped!

I will pull the axle whenever the weather breaks (no garage) - The "man" says itll happen Thursday. Ill keep you posted

I believe I am just the third owner of this car and the last one had it parked under cover for 20 years. No major cancer spots - gas tank and pad immaculate - Even found the build sheet in perfect condition. Interior and all components fully functional with no sun fade or rips. The only non-original component is the Twin dial Tape player

So I think thats at least 2 people who say they have the shafts.... Any costs? With or without the bearings installed....... Another question worth asking is - if the shafts are hard to come by how hard are the bearings to get ahold of. Im thinking ill pull the driver side too and change out the bearings....

Set of bearings (2 bearings and 2 seals for both sides) are 65.00. The axles are 50.00 each here. The one I can install the bearing for you the other would be up to you to get done. Shipping is rpobably 15-20 depending on how far in the woods you are...lol. Jim

Jim - Ill take an axle with bearings and the extra set and seals.... Prob end of this week or beginning of next Ill get with you on particulars - (assuming I do have a 1970 28 spline etc...) :TU:

 

Just PM me with all the details. I will get you a address and number to call. BUT please FIRST remove that axle and make certain it is what we think it is with the seal and bearing. Not that it is that huge of a deal I am pretty sure I have the other sealed bearing axle also ...I just want to ship once. Take care, Jim
