Can anyone tell me if my 1969 buick california GS with a 350/350 came with the 8.5/8.6 axle? If not what is it? I just got my hands on a set of 8.6 12x41 ring and pinon and want to put them in with a posi carrier.

12x41 =3.42 I may have a second set of new ones if anyone is interested.

It is a Buick only 8.2" rear 1968-70. Except for a special run of 3.42 ratio gears and maybe a 3.64 run Monaz had madethere are no repros for these gears.

All books I have seen say the california GS had 3.31 gears. Is that true?

I don't see 3.31 listed in the chart in the 69 parts manual. My 69 GS California had a8.2 rear with 2.56's in it. The California's were based on the Special Deluxe platform, 43327 and unless an owner ordered it with a performance rear, that's probably whats in there.

How is the car spec'd? Auto/manual, AC?

There's a couple of sites that can help you identify the rear in there.

Its a th350 no a/c. I think its closer to 3.31 than 2.56 because of the jump off he line and the rpms at 60 mph. Its all stock with 86,000 miles.

No AC, it could be a 3.23. That's the performance option listed.

Thanks James. Any suggestions on an aftermarket posi and ring and pinion?

There isn't anything for the 8.2 without spending a fortune. You'll do better finding an 8.5 rear. There's a lot of gear and posi combos available for that.

I would check with Monzaz (Jim) here in the gear area. He's forgotten more about these rear ends than I'll ever learn. He'll probably add to this when he sees it.

68-70 Buick rear is a 10 bolt 8.2 ALL by its lonesome self. It is NOT a bad rear design JUST was never supported by the aftermarket...???

We have 3.42 3.64 ring and pinions made by Fabcraft Metalworks...Yes they are expensive BUT again they are truely ALL American made AND they are TOP NOTCH quality for sure. $459.00 a set. Both fit the same carrier below

We also have The matching Auburn posi unit that will work with the gears too. It is a off the shelf part BUT needs some modifying which I do for all the Buick V8 board members for free. $399.00

the 1964-1967 Buick rears use the Ponitac aftermarket 8.2 gear listed as BOP 8.2 gears. Ok? Jim :)

Just PM me or keep asking questions I will do the best I can to help you understand the reason why this rear is the way it is. :beers2:
