    Hello,

My left wheel rear axle seal is leaking, I already ordered a new seal to replace it, do I have to replace the bearing when removing it or I can put it back when seal is replaced ?

    Thanks for your help

No you don,t have to replace the bearing but! l certainly would, if its never been replaced. Id also inspect the axle surface for excessive bearing wear to which all c clip type rears are notorious for.

The bearing is 2 years old ..... it's a non C-clip on Buick axle.
    Thanks

Is it the original 8.5" 10-bolt rear? Did you replace the seal when you replaced the bearing? Is there excessive play,in & out,on the shaft? If so,the bearing is coming off the seat, and the axle shaft is pulling up on the seal, letting oil out of the bottom.

Yes it s the original, equipped with a Eaton differential, new bearing, new seals, and the retaining ring has been welded
It is not yet disassambled ....I just noticed the leak but still have to check for an eventual problem.

Probably the wrong seal thickness. We are having huge issues with the A9 bearing and seal system with ALL brands. :( Most of the time YOU CAN NOT replace the seal with out replacing the bearing and retaining ring also. Just the design of the beast at hand. That seal needs to measure at least .490 :( Jim

The 2146 seal is the thinner one,and listed in some books for the Buick rears. The 712146 is the thicker one.I install the 712146 in everything. You are likely going to need another bearing & seal.Trying to get that bearing off without destroying it will be difficult.

PLEASE measure the seals...ALL 712146 seals are NOT correct. Just about every brand is tainted... It seems somewhere some time the seal specs got messed up out there and 2146 seals are in 712146 boxes etc. Or manufactures got the specs wrong or something.
Look for older seals Like L&S and like I said Timkin seems to be getting them correct so far. :)

Timken is all I ever use. There are different manufacturing locations, like USA,Mexico,Singapore, and some may differ slightly in appearance, but they have always been the wider ones as needed.

Yes and besides I do not know too many places selling just the wedding collar to retaing the bearing after you remove that item off the axle anyway. Another headache with the A9 1970-1975 era axle bearing set-ups. Axle seals MEANS bearing and seal as stated both need be done.

THIS IS WHY you should NEVER install the retaining wedding collar till you know your end play is correct. Install the axle and check your end play with the new seal and bearing. If they check out install the wedding retaining collar and your done. IF it does not spec out at least you can remove the bearing and seal with out too much issue in a press.

    Good luck. Jim Mitschke
