Auto Console shift - Why is the release sticking when handle installed

So I am in the process of installing my auto console in my 70 GS and noticed that when I install the woodgrain handle it seems to bring the vertical bars closer together and pinch the chrome release bar underneath.

Meaning I can pull it up to shift gears but it won’t reset itself to lock into place. The two springs aren’t enough to overcome the friction. The bar goes up and down by itself and sometimes the side screws rub but once the woodgrain handle is on it’s like stuck.

my original plastic pull-up bar, the chrome is all coming off so I am (was trying to) install an aluminum version I bought about 10 yrs ago off Year One.

I put some lithium grease in the verticals sliders but that doesn’t seem to help. Any ideas?

    Thanks
    Nick

Be sure the crews are correct. Some are to big and stick out causing the slides to bind.

Check for rough edges on the counter sunk holes etc. I usually take a fine file to all the pieces to clean them up. Including the pull up bar where it fits in the slots on the ends. it easier to do do on the work bench then have to reassemble in the car once u put the console over the top of the shifter and have to fight it for a second time

Well, got it installed. I ordered a new repo plastic pull bar and it came in. Installed and good to go. Nice and smooth. The newer part is about 0.050” smaller in width so it’s not pushing out as hard and binding up. I also filed the heads of the screws just in case. Disappointed I couldn’t use the aluminum piece I bought a while back. I can always try and shave/file it down and retry later. But for now, we’ll use the plastic piece.

    Thanks
    Nick
