I have a 72 GS 455. Does anyone know the correct color and finish for the interior of the ash tray, the exterior of the tray and the ash tray support/holder?
I know the exterior is same as the dash.

    Thanks,
    George

It was a grey metallic coating or it looks like the natural metal to me.

I think it was natural too. I wondered if bluing or something similar might look halfway normal, lol.

    Ash Tray Finish

    Thanks Guys,

I had the ash tray and the holder can blasted and it looks real natural. I was thinking that I had seen this look before on a 70 GS but I then thought that it was likely coated with some finish to keep it from rusting. The trays I can remember seeing were somwhat rusted on the inside. I am not that concerned with the inside but rather the issue of rust forming on 3 sides and the slide holder. I could use a grey metallic paint. What do you think about clear coating the bare metal? Will that keep the rust under control?

    Thanks,
    George

definitely clearcoat the the bare metal, otherwise it will surface rust.

    Thanks Matt,

The photo shows it well. The slide bracket and the inside and outside of the tray appears to be chromed to me. Let me know if you agree. I will probably not chrome it so I may try chrome look paint and maybe clear coat the chrome paint. I will try a test piece.

    Thanks,
    George

The inside is "bright" cadmium plated.

I agree. However we do not have easy access to have this done so instead we get ours silver zinc plated. It's very cheap and our guy returns our stuff the same day (he even picks it up and brings it back to us). We do prep the parts before he picks them up (bead blastall the old plating off and removes all old rust).

Simply drill out the 2 rivets so the ash tray can be removed from the front plate. To re assemble I just use the smallest straight-blade screws and nuts I could get. Of course if the inside is pitted (most are) it will show even after it is plated, but it can only be seen if some is inside the car looking directly down into the ash tray. Usually at shows we just slide the ash tray about half way out and lots of people notice the "new" ashtray. Simple little details like that really get noticed.

Here is an ashtray that I had replated.

In this picture you can see how the replated ashtray is subtle but adds to the detail of the interior. Next time you are at a show you will notice most people keep their ashtray closed because they are ugly.

    Rubber band around release tab...

Notice also there should be a rubber band around the release tab.
You can see it in the pictures...

Ash tray interior - Tin Zinc Electroplating Sysyem

Now that I know the interior of the ash tray was zinc plated, I came across this
Tin Zinc Electroplating Sysyem at the Eastwood.com website. Seems fairly reasonably priced. Looks like this system can be used to Tin Zinc plate the interior of the ash tray and other parts. Looks like chrome but is tin zinc. Here a link to the product.

    want your ashtray re-plated?

Guys I'm going to have some stuff plated soon and if anyone here is interested in having their ashtray plated like the ones I have pictures above, then just let me know.

I will have to check/verify the cost but at this point I would guess it to be about $25 plus a few dollars to ship it back. email me or PM

If you are lucky enough to own a car that was never smoked in it will likely be in good shape. as will be the headliner. The rusty ones were probably used for the intended purpose hence the condition. I guess back when our cars were new people had better manners using the tray and all. Now jerks just wing the still lit butt out the window to start another forest fire! Just my rant for the day. :af:
